Thank you so much! Can I ask: why choose one school over the other? For example, SWIFT requires 200 hours of drive time with a mentor. Some companies require less but then I’ve seen people say we actually NEED as many hours as possible before going out alone. Also, since employer sponsored school means rolling over in to employment for a year, do you have any recommendations of one or another?

Not much difference in them. CRST is the only one that requires teaming until the contract is fulfilled.

In most cases even 200 isn’t enough, you will realize it when you turn into your 3rd year. Some people just don’t belong on the roads in a cmv.

the more time behind the wheel with someone who knows and can teach you correctly the better. Unfortunately most of the time your going to try and kill your trainer as either they are driving for 6 months or straight up knuckle head.

good luck on the route you choose.

YRC/Yellow has four weeks CDL training and four weeks (160 hrs) instructor ride along on your route. No tuition to repay. Paid about $17/hr during training and then driver pay when you get CDL of about $24/hr starting and around $30+ at top end. Overtime after 8 hours instead of 60 or 70 like many carriers. Local routes. Either daytime pickup and delivery around metro area with home every night and weekends off, or night time line haul between terminals with home twice during week and weekends off starting at around $.61/mile.

Many other carriers listed are team or solo over the road being out for one to several weeks at a time. There are several other LTL carriers other than YRC that have similar routes and even better pay but with tuition repay contract.

the CDL classes are just what you need to get your CDL. The ride along instructor teaches how to real world drive and do the work.
