LOL, another guy who only wanted free info and vanishes. His profile says he was here last on Mar 2015. Long gone now. I wish they could have the decency to come back with what they did or found so we can all learn.

I'm very curious as to what it was! My money's on the accessory drive.

So the accessory drive is known to fail? I'm having the same sound that he's talking about. That accessory drive gear is pretty expensive to play a guessing game with it. Don't want to throw that part at it if it's not the issue. The good thing is you get to check for play on the bull gear while you're at it. Because I changed the alternator (still have the old one) and the belt pulley. This noise didn't start until AFTER I changed the water pump that was leaking from the weep hole. I wonder if the gear lash is off between the water pump and the accessory drive gear.

I'm also having the exact same issue. Same location for the whining noise. Bullgear is good and tight. Recently replaced the air compressor. Noise is still there.

I doubt the gear lash is off on a waterpump. I always suspect alternator bearing first. Then a/c clutch bearing. Could be fan bearing. A noise from no.2 cylinder, might want to take valve cover off and inspect the rollers on rockers. I wouldn’t be surprised if a new waterpump bearing had some noise. Seems I noticed or imagined I heard some last time I changed mine. Don’t overlook mis aligned belts, maybe caused by a loose a/c-alt. bracket. And belt tensioner, (first choice) if equipped.

I just encountered similar noises and pulled the acc drive most of the bearings where gone. I personally have put 65k on this truck and the noise kept getting worse. Inspected bull gear it had no play but now I hear a slight whine from the air compressor smh
