Well I have to ask what is the harm in starting out in 3rd if you are pulling a mty flatbed or light mty trailer. If there is no slippage then there should be no damage

Starting out in a higher gear is a good way to drop a driveline and burn up a clutch. My truck is geared low (70 MPH at 1700 RPM in 10th) And even then, when I'm loaded, its first gear. Only when I'm empty or starting down a grade will I start out in 2nd. If I'm bobtail I might roll out in 3rd. I've watched too many drivers break something or wear it out because they throw it in too high a gear. I try to treat the equipment like I own it. I mean hell, it pays my bills. Might as well try to keep it out of the shop.

I do. Why not? Its only 10 gears. I once rode with a driver that insisted on moving his loaded truck in no lower than 3rd gear. He ended up dropping the drive shaft in a dock trying to pull out with a load of potatoes. He was lucky that they put him in a rental. Penske took two weeks to fix his truck and it had a bad vibration when he got it back. Not saying it will happen to everyone who starts out in a higher gear, but why put the extra stress on the truck for no good reason?

You make a great point and I appreciate your input. I am getting very much concerned on how some grown ### folks in here rattle and curse around like they just got out of their mothers' womb. If anyone think different of an opinion, what's wrong with pointing it out and at the same time be civilized about it? No one deserve the kind of insult grown ### folk dish out around here. People just need to grow up.

When you double clutch, there shouldnt be a need to go all the way down if you are not coming to a complete stop (it is called clutch braking). Unless you want to drop the drive shaft by not using the clutch brake properly. Every time you push the clutch pedal to the floor, the clutch brake comes one. With a push beyond the free-play, you should be able to shift smoothly as long as you are at the proper rpm.

I start out in first gear all the time, loaded. Normally my loads net about 56,000. Mt I'll start out in as high as 4th, my tare is 23900 full of fuel. Fuller 10 speed. I have never had a clutch problem, or drive shaft problem. My current tractor is at 400K mileage I have been the only driver, picked it up new from freightliner.

10 speed single screw 450 hp Mercedes. I shift between 1500 and 1700,crusin rpm 1100 to 1200, runnin down a hill I'll let it run up to 2200 / 2300 with the Jake. I average 5.25 to 6.75 mph. run 90% loaded mainly between St.George UT and LA CA. SO I hit almost every terrain.

i've floated gears in a f-650, f-750 and a sterling, tried and was grinding in this, i know it takes some getting use to, just hoping for some pointers. never had to double clutch before, tried it but i was going all the way down with the clutch twice on one of the videos the guy goes like halfway both times.

You wont drop the drive shaft with the clutch brake, the clutch brake is designed to fail before anything else, it is not heavy duty at all. When you use the clutch to shift you should only depress it maybe 2", when your ready to shift put a little tension on the shifter as you touch the clutch it should just slide right out of gear, as the rpms drop (you will hear the turbo wine down) a little press toward the next gear touch the clutch and it should drop right in. Never force a shift, never.......
