It's a DOT requirement that they go back 10 years. Most companies though really only look at the last 3.

You have to remember that right now there are 100 driving jobs and 100,000 drivers trying to get them. If you are not one of the very best then you are fighting a very hard battle. Every ding every dent every little mistake you have made makes it that much harder to get hired. It's not like it was just a couple of years ago when any warm body would do. Now you have to show that you are a professional driver and not just some yahoo with a CDL. After next summer when the CSA 2010 goes into effect it will be even harder to get AND KEEP a driving job. The days of cowboy/outlaw trucking are over.

I am sure it depends on the company. I think the big companies have so many applicants and they just take the ones that look the best on paper.

The smaller companies I think look at you as a person and your record. I think they will give you a little slack if they think you will work hard and drive safe.

Trucking companies get their MVRs from various sources. Very few states get their MVRs from the actual state. Many companies sell driver MVR info including DAC Services. On more that one occassion I have seen MVRs provided by third party service company with information not listed on the driver's official MVR.

Drivers should be aware of their appeal rights offered by the FMCSR:

    Be safe.

The FMCSR requires a driver to list 10 years of CDL related experience on the application. If a driver only has one year of CDL experience then they have to list three years of employment history.

The FMCSR requires employers to verify three years of employment history.

    Be safe.

Crete asks for 10 years employment history. I think they verify 3. That is on newbies.

Every company MUST ask for 10 years employment history! Go back and read the FMCSA posted above 391.21, add 3 + 7 you get the 10 that you are always asked to provide on an application!

Now most companies will ask for the past 3 years on traffic violations or even want 7 years, DOT reportable accidents and incidents. Some will ask for DUI/DWI in last 7 or 10 and not hire due to those. Those are insurance requirements mainly or the company has set those to have a "better class" of driver.

Right now I'm recruiting for 1 company that is allowing 4 "minor" incidents 1 speeding ticket that's not a "major" moving and even relaxed the felony policy down to 7 years as long as it's not drug or violent in nature.

It's all in who the company feels will make a reliable driver or not and who the insurance company "might" let sit in the seat.

And all of your information can come from our favorite company to hate DAC/USIS/HireRight or whatever they call themselves this year! They do everything from MVR to criminal background checks and everything in between.

They only have to have 3 years if you haven't been a commercial driver on the job info.
