Thank you. I just looked at the radar and the weather seems to be easing up a bit. But I don't want any surprises on I-84. So I'm going to take the route through Winnemucca. Not many truckstops on this route though. I'll probably spend the night in Winnemucca because Burns is out of range. Or maybe drive a little more and stay either at the Sinclair on US 95 or Sawtooth Station in Whitestown.

    What is PDX?

Just run your usual route. Pdx is only 2.5 hrs away from that 84 exit onto 82. It’s usually just rain from there on. The Gorge is a beautiful scenery during the day. But yeah 84 has been shut down multiple times this week and I was actually stuck at la grande for 4hrs last night and of course chained up going up the blues when it opened up. Good luck!!!

The route I prefer in the winter is

Us95 to I80 to Us 95 into Oregon

From Jordan Valley, I take State road 78 into Burns

    Us 20 to Bend OR

    US 97 to Madras, Or

    US 26 to Portland

The only difficult part on that route is the section of US 26 near Mt Hood, but I prefer it to I 84

There is no “great way” over the mountains in winter and I adjust as needed with weather reports. But I hate US 93 to I84 with a passion in winter.

Well here is an update...I left Vegas around 0930. I drove a whopping 200 miles before I had to shut it down. All winter hell broke loose about 20 miles south of Tonopah. I was stuck on US 95 for hours---literally. The road iced up very quickly and a lot of trucks got stuck. Including mine. I got stuck 2 miles south of the truckstop in Tonopah. How's that for luck? I was spinning my drives to no avail in the middle of the highway. One guy had his brakes freeze on him. NDOT had several trucks and plows out there but the poor guys were overwhelmed. They shoveled salted sand under my drives and I was able to break free...briefly. A hundred yards up the road I started to slide again and got stuck. The DOT boys came back an hour later with more sand but still no luck. Finally, a guy with a flatbed tow truck came by and pulled me free with his winch. I slipped him a $20 bill. I then drove to the truckstop where I almost got stuck again. So I found a spot and shut it down with 2 hours left on my 14.

Needless to say, I probably won't make my 0200 appointment on Thursday because I'm about 750 miles away. My plan was to get there tomorrow around 1800. So much for that...

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The snow stopped a while ago and there is very little chance of more in the next 24 hours. So I'm wondering if it would be safe to start rolling in a few hours? It is about 18 degrees. Would the ice have cleared up? I know it's a stupid question but this is only the 2nd time in 5 years driving that I go through this. I've been lucky. I reckon there is still ice everywhere since the temperature has stayed below 25. My boss wants me to get rolling after doing an 8/2 split, which would be at 1am. I told him to GO POUND SAND.
