Easiest trick in the book. Unless you're parking in a lake Lol they won't freeze. The last mile or so before getting to the yard I'll get on em hard a few times, and drag em for the last 1/4 mile or so. Both wagon and tractor since I swap wagons a lot

Good write up as always hammer

Great post hammer. I will add that u shouldn't park in potholes or any standing water... because when it freezes , u will literally be stuck.... I never froze my trailer brakes up before but I froze my entire wheels into a puddle at the truckstop... how dumb could one be..:biggrin_25523:

Great post! You sound like my Dad talking.

Another thing he taught me was say 5 minutes after parking, go ahead and pull forward about 18 inches. When you park and the tires are warm, it melts the snow/ice and when you go to take off the next morning your sitting in little cupped out slick spots. This 5 minute trick allows the tires to cool and you’ll still be sitting on top of the service come time to leave.

As far as drums, besides the tricks you mentioned and others did about dragging the brakes.. if you are worried about it or have to park with them all set.. what you do is have a spray bottle mixed up with 50/50 water/coolant. Spray the drums where you can get to them. Pull forward and back a few feet to coat the shoes and drums. Set your brakes and go to bed. No worries come morning.

Great post. Once stopped in my parking spot I will drive forward and back several times to flatten the ice & snow on the ground and then sit stationary with no brakes applied for a while before setting the brakes. My dad would chock the wheels for say 30-60 minutes before setting his brakes.

I love disc brakes. They grab, so you have to beware of that. They will take a lot more than drum brakes. I'm sure they are more expensive, but I'm a company driver.

Every hookup to a trailer I reverse a bit to make sure all wheels are moving back there. Also check mirrors for movement as I pull out of spot. Rain or shine, hot or cold.

    Cat sdp Thanks this.
