Hey Yall! im new to the board but not to truckin! my dad drove a truck for 14+ yrs and i am wantin to git into truckin too. my question is can i just take my written test, use my Dads truck to take the test at the DMV, and still git on with a major carrier with zero OTR experiance? i know swift and afew others take on brand new guys and train them, but i dont want to pay to learn what ive already been taught! LOL! so will gittin my CDL on my own hurt my chances of gittin a job? Thanks in advance! oh, and will any DMV let you take your drivin test or are there special places to take it? Thanks in advance!
getting my CDL on my own

in ohio you gotta go to special testing places. getting your cdl won't hurt your odds i wouldn't think, may not help much, insurance may still want you to go through carrier "schools"

Go for it RickG!

1. depends on dmv in your city, most only test # certain facilities. 2. getting your cdl saves you money up front, but most companies will still require you to go through training. the driving school is part of their income. 3. if you've been driving under the radar with your dad, then you may be able to get some experience with an owner/operator or rock quarry. you can learn alot driving off-road vehicles also.

I wish I had your spunk, young man. Good luck! Never take "NO" for an answer, take it as a door that's locked from the inside.....and you're inside! Now what do you do?Texas Diesel Junkie Thanks this. -

grimesjm1, im not gittin it on my own to improve my chances of scorin a job, i just dont want to shell out 6k for schoolin, and no guarantee of a job! ive been around trucks for pretty much my whole life so passin it the test aint gunna be a problem, and plus if i git it on my own, i dont have to sign a contract with the company right? but down here in Texas, yall dont think theres a "special" place to take the test?
JustSonny Thanks this. -
