When they were buildong the original Carquinez bridge between Vallejo and Crockett, Ca in the late 20s, the divers working on the future pilings saw some sturgeon that they said were gigantic. Scared them as they had hever heard of anything that big and they all came out of the water. Wasn't til the mid 50s that someone finally figured out what they were eating (Grass Shrimp) and started sport fishing for them.
In the 80s, I had a foster kid,15, and my cousin got him a job as a deckhand on one of the charter boats out of Crockett. He caught several nice ones but had to give them to customers that didn't catch anything. Still, he learned a lot, had fun, and got some great tips.
