i hear that the CAT engines with ACERT suck. i hear the CAT engines before ACERT were the best motors CAT ever made. i'm sure there's gotta be a few people hear that have driven all the different types of CAT motors. do the CAT engines with ACERT suck? i was talking to a Mobil truck driver and he says they've been having problems with their CAT engines. the trucks out of his location are 2009 Kenworth T800's. i'm not sure if they have the C13 or the C15 engines, but it's definitely gotta be the one with ACERT because it's an 09 truck.

Aside from poor fuel mileage, I love my Acert Cat.
-
Wasn't CAT getting out of the highway engine business?

The accert cats suck bcuz of the whole diesel particulate filter #####...... it has 2turbos, which means expense to replace 1 and when 1 goes the other usually does......lol....most of em use oil excessively......they suffer from horrible fuel economy(3-4mpg) losses in power, excessive engine temp...........plus a similar non acert cat engine will chew it up an spit it out........oh yea...........not many garages know how to work on them......they benefit nicely from a muffler change..........i am a CAT man(ive driven all the c15s) and i would not recommend an acert to my worst-est-est enemy......i recommend a 550 pre acert motor or hell even a old mechanical motor.......well dont take my word for it....cuz some guys here swear by their acerts........ask around!
-
oh yea.............i believe cat have stopped officially making engines........someone correct me if im wrong........
-
The way I understand it is they pulled out, when the emissions crap hit the fan. They only make heavy equipment engines now. I'll have to hunt for the thread, but I know its here.

I wounder if the equipment motors have all the smog junk on them. The c15 and c18 acert don't say anything about a dpf. Would it be possible to switch out parts. It would most likely cost more than the truck to do it. Here is a link:

i hear the best CAT motors were the pre ACERT ones. so, basically before the EPA 2004 standards?

for new engines, are cummins and detroit diesel better? -
There is not really enough data for the new engines, but I have been hearing that the all-newly designed DD15 is doing very well.

The best electronic motor that CAT has made from the factory was the 6NZ serial number prefix. The ACERTs (pre dpf) can run with the 6NZ motor, but only after some tweaking. The high temps, bad mileage, and cold weather issues can be fixed by a downloader or a tuned ECM. Many people shy away from the ACERT because of lack of knowledge and the inability to understand them...the motors are pretty easy to figure out and run once a person sits down and really thinks things through. Personally, I wouldn't trade my ACERT for any other CAT motor.
