I disagree with this analogy.
For a single man, this can be the dream of a lifetime. Especially if he gets on with a decent company. Puts in his first 3-5 years at one company allowing him to take rather lengthy and nice vacations. If he's smart, he'll own most of the essentials before he's 30. Especially if he stays with family while home.
For the married man...it can be a complete nightmare if he has to do OTR.
As far as dead end ??? Not hardly, it's paid for many an education outside of trucking. Online educations make that even easier in todays world.
is 29,000 a year job worth leaving to drive trucks?

This past year I brought home 20,000 and next year will be less due to insurance rates going up. I know trucking is a gamble but I am willing to take that if I have a chance to maybe land a good job paying good money. If all else fails I have a good track record with the company that I am in and Im pretty sure they would give me a job again.

You can be sucessful as a truck driver.
You can have a fairly normal life doing it.
I've attached a pic of my 2009 settlement to give you an example.
I own my tractor and my health insurance is covered by my wife.
Now is a good a time as any to start.
Good Luck!

I am pulling around 1000 a week right now and home nightly. It can be done but don't bow to the bottom feeders.
-
Let me give you an idea of how bad the market is for truckers, in Dec. 2008 my company decided to hire two drivers for semi full-time (we were two months from the start of our slow season so they knew the full time would turn to part -time), the only posted the ad on Craigs List. Over the course of three days they had 600 apps to reveiw, and that was just for the drivers who met the minimum requirements (mainly 3yrs exp. and 3 yrs local exp.), they pitched another 1,500 apps. who didn't meet the minimum.

Yeah , right . Now is a good time to start . I'm sure there are wannabes that are happy to find a post to show their family to confirm their wise decision to go to a CDL mill . Do you have a link to post showing how much freight has increased in the past few months or any industry forecasts for 2010 ?
-
Don't bow to the bottom feeders ? That eliminates 99% of the opportunities for the wannabes .
-
But many of those 1.500 had positive attitudes and knew they would succeed because the really , really wanted to be a truck driver .
Our carrier has over 100 terminals and applications are only accepted through the corporate office who then forwards them to terminals after weeding out those that aren't qualified . Our terminal got over 40 applications . These were very qualified applicants but less than 10% will be considered . -
I agree plus I think im in that 99%.

It is good to see that some people actually do good in this business. Does anyone have information that say something bad about trucking? It seems that when someone say something good it is quickly hated on or shot down with negative remarks.
