What is this press sleeve and why do i need it. Another #### tool i need to buy? Press sleeve. Says to heat gear and also use sleeve. WTH they make this engine so complicated. At this point i guess i should replace injector number 5 since ET says its been giving me issues

Press sleeve is to clamp the gear to the crank to assure it is seated and straight. The 8H-8581 is a feeler gauge set. The gear should not be more then 4 thou away from the crank at any point. Pushing by hand may not get the gear tight enough. You can try without the sleeve as long as a 4 thou feeler gauge cannot fit in once you are done. Manual also states the gear can be heated for install twice before it needs replaced.

Just pull the cam. Trying to remove the cam gear while the cam is installed is probably almost impossible without making a mess of it.
Pulling the cam involves removing the valve train and holding all the lifters up to remove it.

The Bendix 750 on one of my engines is 40 years old and has almost 2 million on it. Been through 2 inframes. No need to replace “just because.”

i suspected head issues as well as other things with it. been dealing with it for 4 years. i suspected it to be problems. 40 years on an air compressor? well even if thats true, wouldnt you agree that they dont make things like they used to anymore? i mean come on man. your in the trucking industry. My bendix reman from years ago wanst remanned by the same group of guys that built yours 40 years ago. Just a bunch of minimum wage idiots that dont care about life. sweat shops no need to ad insult to injury. I dont have a warm shop. i have a field and the wind blows. freezing my ### off and im looking at 3k just in gears alone from cat. let alone my time and labor and all the other gaskets and things i need. Peterbilt has the compressor and trying to get cat to pay for it. They said cat wont pay for the parts that got damaged becuase of faulty unit.

Thanks to all who persuaded me to pull the cam and rest of gears. Ill have much more piece of mind now. Also pulled power steering gear as well. there was still shrapnel behind that. So alot of stuff would have been over looked. The coat hanger trick was kind of pain in the ### but it worked out. THen i couldnt find the cam pin to release cam but found it. The puller i bought yanked the gear off. .Still have yet to yank crank gear. i actually forgot to pull it off becuase i had an appointment to make and was pressed for time.
So heres the question, Do i buy all brand new gears or used? the used gears i would worry about are the press on gears like the cam and crank. You would have to wonder how they removed them. that would suck for those to come off. Right now in my account on cat parts, i have just the gears alone at 3k dollars. used ones would be a quarter of the price. cam gear is 900 and so is the idler. The idler is showing that they dont have that part number. My part number is 133-7087 on the gear. They are showing 7086. Usually when that happens they say part has been replaced. but not the case. Maybe i will call in morning.
So back to the question, What gears would you or would you not buy used? Air compressor gear is 500 bucks from cat also
Here is a quick video of cam removal

Make sure you put that sucker to bed. You gonna be anywhere near this big band of snow? We are expecting 10-18 inches over next 2 days.

I give you props for taking on that task outside. Good luck. Looks stellar from what I can see.

i thank you! i have one more day of dry whether. i might put the only pan on and just call it quits for a few days. thusday and friday its gonna be a tad bit warmer in pa where im at so we are supposed to just get rain for 2 days out of the system. Parts wont be here till monday anyhow.
Can you tell me what you would do as far as buying used gears or just spend the money and buy new? thanks again for your time

I would buy new unless you can be certain they are all off the same engine. Mismatched and noisy would be a bad finish result after all that work.
