Hi everyone and welcome. I haven’t seen a thread dedicated to the ice road season in Yellowknife serving the mines. My husband works up there and I figured this was a good way to keep in the loop because there’s barely service at most camps, plus a fifteen minute time restriction. Let’s hear how the weather is and the road. How’s security this year? How’s the locals attitudes (last year was a bit scary). Etc. Etc. Rants and raves, not so much please....

Most people make more money on land instead of driving on frozen water! Plus storms are everywhere!

This winter has been good although bit of a late start. One year in particular we only had about 4 weeks of ice road,,,not enough to get all supplies into mines/communities so much had to be flown in. Large fuel bladders loaded on to C46's
I crossed Shoal Lake,,,there was a few acres ice covered in water I drove through,,,looked like a big hole in a lake:D

There’s been a few bad holes from the pressure ridges this year, a few snowballs hit and some guys are having trouble on the portages with their loads and incoming empty trucks not calling the mile markers. A few inexperienced drivers are having a bad go of it as well, right into the trees or missing the express lanes. Just remember- sometimes there’s a language barrier as drivers are from all over the world. Westcan seems to be losing trucks and drivers, Sidhu seems to be holding steady, time limits have been removed since they realized it was not getting the loads that they needed because they put it on. Repair shop time can be up to a full day wait- lots of boo boos (guys driving trucks into the ground). There’s been a few hellos from far away drivers who didn’t get up there this year. Safety is quite the pickle once you get to YK, so be safe everyone.

Most temperatures have been hovering between -30 and up to -60 with the wind this year. She’s thick but ridges are more of a problem than usual.

Had a moment.... safety is harassing all the drivers and overstepping their reach. Be aware drivers, they want you out if you’re not with YOU KNOW WHO......
