You'll be happy to know automatics have improved by leaps and bounds since then. Smooth as butter.

Was PIE tanker division a fuel delivery outfit? I remember the PIE curtain vans growing up in Oregon, but I don't recall any tanks.

The tanker division, proper name Bulk Commodities Division, was primarily a petroleum products common carrier. We did loads from refineries, barge landings, and pipeline terminals to bulk plants, gas stations, and commercial accounts of all kinds.
They also hauled chemicals but I never did any of that. Most of the chemical bids that I saw were for teams and they ran coast to coast.
Matlack bought the tankers when PIE folded up. Matlack promptly closed most of the outlying terminals and concentrated their trucks in the big cities. I was working out of the Pasco terminal and they offered us employment at the bottom of their seniority list and domicile in either Seattle, Portland Oregon or Lansdowne Pennsylvania. Most of us told them to stuff it and quit. Teamsters did nothing to help us.
What Matlack wanted was PIE's chemical hauling rights that ran coast to coast. They never really wanted the petroleum tankers and got rid of them as soon as possible.
I don't remember ever seeing any PIE curtain vans. Other than a few open tops and very few flatbeds the freight division was all vans.
