If you look at the "trusty atlas", 10 and 20 are like two bows going in parallel with less than 20mi difference. 10 has San Antonio and Houston, big no in my book if I can avoid it. Between them few constructions with 60mph limit, if that is possible at all. 10 has big hills before San Antonio. Bumpy roads, scales were open after when I passed last time, did DOT L1 in it. Missing New Orleans completely with its wavy bridges and traffic. I do the math not by miles I save, but the time and calmness I'm getting out of the "extra" few. But to each his own)

PS: by the way, 20 runs below Dallas, had never any trouble going through.

When you get off the I-10, just take I-20 the whole way to Jackson MS. When you get to Dallas there are a couple of adjustments you can make to stay out of there. When you get to Jackson, take US 49 down to US 98 and that will take you to Mobile where you can hook up with the I-10. I took this route all the time. It's pretty flat and the only congested spot is DFW. Also, make sure you take the loop around Shreveport. I-20 in Shreveport is a pretty rough ride. If I remember correctly, the loop only adds 2 miles to your trip but saves you time and wear and tear.

Actually, a better route and shorter I think, is to take I-40 out of Cali straight to Amarillo. There, you take US 287 down to near Denton TX and then make your way to the I-20. When I worked for Stevens, US 287 was my GO-TO route heading west/northwest out of Dallas.

Correction: I just checked. The I-10 route is a shorter route than the other two, by about 12 miles. But I-10 takes you through too many big metros.

40 is the most hilly road W to E out of all of them, even if it were shorter, I'd not take it. But that's just my perception.

Yeah, but they are not monster hills. The thing about I-10 is that you have to go through Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston. The I-20 really only takes you through Dallas. And you can by-pass it if you want.

Id take the 40 over the 10 any day. I have not hit traffic on the 40 at all. The 10? That’s a crap shoot.

I usually run I40 when I go from Indy to Pomona and back. This trip called for the event setup to go straight from Pomona to Gainesville. Glad I didn’t go 40 this time s well as it is shut down I’m AZ to NM. Winter storm

Running US49 from Jackson Ms to Hattiesburg and 98 to Mobile and I 10 is a pain in the rear end. If you do have to go that way it’s best to get off 98 at Lucedale and run 63 down to I10 at Pascagoula.
Still better to run I10 all the way especially in the winter.
