I've screwed up my life pretty bad - will I even be able to get hired if I pass CDL school?

Well, my friend, I appreciate your honesty, and many never get to that "realization point", so you're at least that far ahead of the game. Generally, society still thinks "once a burnout, always a burnout", and to some extent that's true, but if you really want to, I think you'll be okay. Just don't get too confident. What happens many times, people like you turn around "just enough" to get in, then, on Super Bowl weekend, you go for that "Super Bowl", thinking, it will be fine, and Whaam, then we hear about the drug testing fiasco and "what to do next"? Usually there's some motivation for a "turnaround", like a dame, or crisis, but at 31, you have a ways to go, hopefully, and retirement comes up fast and I see the ones that didn't plan well,,living in cars. Best of luck, keep us posted, eh?

Thank you for the responses everyone. This has been very reassuring. Western Express was actually one of the companies I had been looking at.
I start CDL school at the end of April, a four week course; two weeks of classroom (9hrs/day) and two weeks of driving/practicing in a yard. This school is based out of Las Vegas and there are several companies that hire from this school's training program. Which companies, I don't know, but the website shows that there's companies that visit during the classroom portion and try to recruit prospective drivers.

I don't have any DUIs and my only vehicle wreck was from when I was 17 years old so as far as I know that won't appear on the driving record.

I am interested in doing OTR - from what I have read most of the students at this school are aiming for local or regional jobs due to their wives and kids. I feel like that gives me an advantage in that regard. I'm hoping everything goes well. Thanks again for the kind responses.

    Are you going to Southwest?
    ~
On the first day of cdl school, start submitting applications. Don't wait until graduation; start the first day.
Apply to all the OTR companies the school lists, plus we'll give you options also, the school may not be aware of. Job offers doesn't obligate you, just gives you choices.
    For example:
Wild West Express hires new cdl school grads. The website shows 3 yrs. experience required, but recently started hiring new cdl school grads.
Apply with the application on the website.
