I've screwed up my life pretty bad - will I even be able to get hired if I pass CDL school?

As someone who did his fair share of teenage stuff (though only through the grace of the universe without any convictions, as much as the local cops tried), this industry is a complete lifestyle change, but it might be one you need.

Even as a journalist I was still occasionally doing dumb stuff. Sometimes you have to remove yourself from the local scene to get your head straight.

If I were a hiring manager, and I saw your convictions, but then I also saw that you have had it with how things have gone in the past? I'd hire you over a lot of people, just because you know what you DON'T want. That's as important as knowing what you want, and sometimes moreso.

I'd keep an eye on you to make sure the old ways hadn't crept back in, but yeah. You got your shot.

And I'm sure there are people in a position to hire someone that are like me. So give it a shot, I say.

If your stuff is 10 years old you can get a job in trucking. Get that job, and HAVE NO ACCIDNETS or INCIDENTS and you can move on to bettre companies. Do yourself a favor and find the company you want to work for and discuss with them your background. In short, find the job FIRST and then go to CDL school. SOME CDL schools will take your money and tell you "come on in" if you were on Death Rom for murder. Most CDL schools will evaluate your background, really just seeing if you can get hired at the 3 companies that hire most of their students.

In trucking you are going to be alone 99% of the time so your habits and attitudes will help you are hurt you. There won't be someone around to stop you from returning to bad habits.

@Chinatown I am enrolled in RTDS not southwest. Good advice on applying right when I start school, I did not know I should apply that early.

@tscottme I am planning on being upfront with a hiring manager and telling them basically what I have typed here; that my work history looks like crap but I am determined to fix my life. I'm hoping someone is willing to give me a shot.

RTDS is an excellent choice for school.
Yeah, be up front when asked about work history.
All the rest is too old to worry about, but don't volunteer any information that isn't asked for.
