    Hi,
i have a 2017 VNL that was starting to have some problmes so I took it to the dealer back in August of 2021. They said the transmission is faulty and because I had 2 days left on the warranty, they wwould replace if for free. So, they got a completely new transmission sent from the factory and put on the truck. Now, after 6 months and exactly 50,000 miles driven, the truck broke down and had to tow it to a Mack dealer in NH. They took the transmission down and they said the transmission is completely shot because it ran without any oil in it!. Barely had a cup of oil in it.They also said that there was no evidence of leak on the outside only that theere was no oil inside the transmission. The driver said he didn`t see any leaks and the mechanic also didn`t see any leaks.
The dealership that installed the transmission cannot explain where did the oil go and they would not cover the breakdown, blaiming it on me for not checking the transmission level. As you know, on the I-shift you have to go under the truck and look through the sight glass.
Anyway, as of right now I am on the hook for the transmission. Will talk to a lawyer about options to litigate.
Did anybody have a similar issue ? What are your toughts on this issue?

Pretty obvious they never bothered to fill it when they replaced it. I'd definitely be talking to a lawyer.

I thought the new guy filled it.
They pay to fix it or you sue.

:dontknow:,,,Volvo,,,automatic,,,what's the worst that could happen? I think we'll see more and more of this as the world continues to deteriorate. Didn't check the oil, why would a driver check the oil on a transmission? I say it had no oil to INSURE it's failure. Simply unacceptable,,,yet, here we are. Good luck, pal

I’ve heard of different dealership trying to use this excuse multiple times. Just stay on it. Sometime the o ring for the oil filter drips down it will not leave any trace as it is to low to the ground see if they can check that.

The dealership is refusing to repair it.Between the dealership that installed it and the dealership that is working on it now cannot explain to me what happened to the transmission and where did the oil go. They can only say one thing for certain, and that is that I am paying to get it replaced.

My only logical explanation is that they never filled it with the right amount so the transmission ran for 50k miles on 2-3 gallons of oil before it burned it all up.Will need to find a lawyer to escalate things.

Only way to check the oil in the transmission is to crawl under the truck and look through the sight glass. Volvo is marketing this transmisison as a maintenance free one, there is no mention in the manual that you have to crawl under the truck daily, weekly, or monthly and they say that you should change the oil in it at 500k miles. The dealer that is working on it now said that there is absolutely no sign of leak anywhere, so what could I have done to prevent this? Only drove it 50k miles and it fried on me completely.

Sorry took so long, does the truck have a trans temp gauge? That would have indicated a problem long before it blew, same thing, probably no gauge, you don't sound like an idiot, I mean, heck, a gauge might indicate a problem,,,we'll never sell replacement transmissions with those. Sorry, I don't have an answer, and "crawling under the truck" isn't acceptable either. Just one of those "learn and weep" moments, and hopefully too many of those( in a row) doesn't do you in. Best of luck, my advice, if you still want to do this, bend over, fix the trans, and take it in the shorts. Maybe next week will be better, the O/O's creed.

You surely had to do PM sometime during those 50k miles. What was the transmission oil level than?
