Years ago the city redid a drainage across several of our back yards. I came home and looked at the spur pipe from center on my yard to the mainline 20 feet away an obviously running uphill. I called a friend in the PW department the next day and told him water did not run uphill, better rethink that before he built a trap and grid cover on my end. He told me they "shot" the grade and it would be fine.
They came out the next morning to work, to find me sitting in a lawn chair and idly watching leaves floating from the main line back into the end in my yard.
I also told him that if I had skinned up as many trees with the tractor/backhoe as they did, Daddy would have jerked my xxx off the seat and whupped my xxx real good.
The pic you posted of the roadbed tractor and man. We used to do that with a Ford 8N and a Danseur three point blade. Get off, pull the pins, twist the blade the other way, pin it, make a pass going back, Reverse and repeat. You wanted to ditch, crank the adjustable leg of the three point lower and make a pass.
All the depth you could get and needed more, go back and repeat it till deep enough. Hydraulics controlled by a joystick is a wonder to behold!!!
