I would for sure do as passing through says and call Cat for the right answer. Kind of scares me a little knowing it might not be the correct head. If it is the correct head, than check the timing. If not, I would be having some nasty words with your dealer. If it is the wrong head, you are #### lucky, the valves could of hit the crown of the piston, and you would be doing more than swapping a head..

I hear good things about the aftermarket heads for cat w higher nickel. Come from brazil or chyna..i believe. MHC... ugh.

I have a 1999 3406e model caterpillar. 1LW19630 I had water pushing out of the blow by which I knew I either had a blown head gasket or a cracked head (Had bubbles in rad also). Removed the head and it was cracked between 2 and 3. Replaced the head made sure I had #1 dead center and pinned the motor got everything back on the truck cranked it and it has a terrible miss. Took it to my local MHC-Kenworth they hooked the computer up to it and said #5 injector was bad. No codes were thrown. They did say it showed low voltage. (wiring harness they thought would have fixed that issue) Replaced #5 injector still misses. Got a new wiring harness for the head (injectors) just in case a wire got damaged when I replaced the head. I still have a terrible miss. When you give the truck throttle it has a terrible miss. It sounds almost like a vehicle that is trying to burn water instead of fuel. I do not have any abnormal smoke from my pipes. I changed fuel filters. I put new boost pressure sensor. cam sensor.
I've done this about 3 times on this particular truck and I'm stumped. I've never had any issues once I've put a new head on the truck. There are no leaks no water in the oil absolutely nothing abnormal just a miss. Any ideas??

Check your injectors really carefully. On a cold start check each cylinder with an IR thermometer. You may find one hole a little colder than the others as it warms up. That’s the bad one. That could be dangerous. They either ####ed a nozzle up when they were out on the bench and the spray pattern is messed up, or you have a bad spray pattern from an injector about to drop a tip. My 5EK started missing a bit, never got around to hunting it down before the tip came off and it put the liner, piston and half the connecting rod out through the side of it.

When you have the injector out get a rubber tip blow gun and pressure up that cylinder to see if its leaking possibly. one less thing to be guessing about.
