I bought a new Peterbilt and I’m picking it up in Texas and I need to drive it back to Ny. Do I need to install an ELD before I make the trip back home?

No. Use a paper log book. I assume you are not hauling a load.
Siinman Thanks this. -
No I’m not hauling anything back with me. I do have to stop in Louisiana to get a visor and fenders put on it but that’s it.
-
Legally yes. There are no exemptions for moving a vehicle just because you haven't gotten around to installing an ELD yet.
Practically you will likely be fine with paper, but there is always that one officer... -
What ELD system do you have?
I recently did the same thing but we use KeepTruckin
They just put me on manual which allowed me to enter all the info in the app like a paper log and I just put a piece of paper in the window that had the numbers on it. Company. And Not For Hire
Rolled through a few scales and once they seen that they hit the green lightSiinman Thanks this. -
He should be under the same exemption as a drive-away service guy delivering a new truck. It shouldn’t have been registered yet, travelling on a transit plate or permits and not in service. The e-log reg doesn’t start til there’s a Prorate plate on it
-
What do you have it registered as if at all? Unregistered they don't know it's not to pull a racecar trailer, expensive hobby but still a hobby, I wouldn't even worry about a logbook at all. Until registered as a CMV it isn't one and not subject to those laws.
-
He's not a drive away. That only applies if the truck is the shipment, i.e. getting it delivered. Moving your own truck is simply repositioning your own truck.
And there is no where in the regs that state ELD only goes into effect once plated... -
It’s not under Federal regs until there’s a Prorate plate and on it. Even if whatever jurisdiction issues a permit for it has a state level e-log reg it’s probably still exempt on a transit permit because it’s not in service.Rubber duck kw Thanks this.

All CMV's are required to have a eld.. unless it's older (older mechanical engine)
BUT until it REGISTERED AS A CMV it's NOT A CMV...Siinman and Rubber duck kw Thank this.
