I doubt that a 1999 engine had old style pistons.
Also there are many things you can do to keep a series 60, running strong.
Change oil around 10,000 miles.
Run overhead yearly.
If pre DDEC 4 check the bull gear for wear.
DDEC 4 and up had a better Compact bullgear that only needed to be replace at rebuild of 1 million miles.
Try not to run a series 60 past 1 million miles. Unless it is not extreme oil usage of 1 gallon of oil per day.
Best all round engine ever.

My DDEC 111 I had overhauled at 960,000 for no reason, other than I was running back and forth to Alaska from all over the lower 48 and figured it eventually had to go down. I did change the oil regularly but didn't do the overhead that often. I took it to stewart and stevens in lubbock and had it done, and they checked the bull gears, but didn't replace them.
They actually told me when they pulled the valve train, they seriously doubted it would need them replaced, because it was in such good shape. The inframe did come with all new valve train components though.
It was and still is a good cheap engine to run, it just doesn't have the torque I need for what I do up here. If I had to go back to runningthe lower 48, I would be sitting in it though.Intothesunset Thanks this. -
A 12.7 Detroit DDEC 4 and up can easily be programmed for 1850 torque.
How much torque do you need? -
About 2900 feels pretty good lol
-
Well a true 1850 would get it, but even the detroit reps could never get one to work up here spending months trying. Detroit themselves finally threw in the towel and put a pittsburg box on one test truck, but it didn't last much longer. lol
You can get by with them I know of a couple that used them for a few months to get started, one changed out his gears to 433 to make it work for him.
Another thing is they do not like the cold, and will actually make you think the rods are knocking when it gets below 60 below, for some reason a few quarts of tranny oil in the fuel will quiet them back back to normal. -
A regular diesel tuner can set a 12.7 to 1850 to easy as a few clicks.
But the right cam and and injectors will help. -
Like I said, detroit spent a lot of bucks and time trying to get them to compete, she didn't fly. You can get by, but that is all. These new detroits are pulling fairly well, actually doing as good as the cummins, and better on fuel. A few of the OO's have gone to either freightliner or star, but not a lot of miles on them either yet, The first one I know of that bought one, bragged on it pretty good, but they had to put him a new engine in pretty quick too. lol His brother bought one the same time, and when he decided to sell had a hard time getting rid of it.
But the new cummins are not getting a lot of miles on them either. -
The way I understand the history of 12.7 . First wristpins were upgraded, as they would sometimes come apart at around 750 k, sometimes ruining the block, along with cooling nozzles on premium engines, then upper cylinder cooling jackets to prevent upper cylinder scuffing, probably caused IMO from increasing HP to 500. Detroit was trying to stay in the HP race without building a bigger displacement engine.1999 or so they had an unadvertised limited production 550 hp version. Didn’t last long at all. Bull gears are all the roller type, except for a few compact design (14L style) used during the last year of production,If I remember correctly, when the 14L came out, the 12.7 was only available up to 470 hp. No more 500 hp. 14 L took the place of 500 hp 12.7

Hey Benjamin260
What would be the BEST set up on a 1995 12.7 Series 60 engine for Heavy Haul applications? Looking for the BEST blend of Power, Reliability and Fuel Mileage.
Tuning?
Injectors?
Turbo?
Manifold ?
Cam?
Thanks in advance!
