Hey all,
I am planning to start my own trucking company, and purchasing a truck at an auction, which is where my question comes from. The auction is not in my state (they are all over), and I am out of Florida, I was told by a local dealer that I can purchase the truck and register it in FL and get a tag and drive it off the lot to say my parking lot, and wait until my USDOT and MC papers are cleared along with authority, but that was a regarding a local purchase. Does anyone know if this is possible to do with a truck from out of state?. I am not sure what requirements I need to get a tag for it, or if there is a physical inspection require.
Just in case, I have been a local truck driver for almost 7 years now, clean record, but it was all local (within state) work with heavy trucks, both tractor+trailer n straight trucks (delivering stones/marble/granite). However I plan to maybe run tri state or regional with own truck, so some stuff is kinda new to me, specially interstate regulations and IFTA stuff as I was a company driver before.
Self delivery of truck

FWIW, back in February I bought an international cabover in Kentucky and drove it 600 miles back to Georgia. Mind you this was from a private seller not auction. I did temporarily get bobtail insurance for it. No tags whatsoever. I didn't pull into no weigh scales and i didnt have any issues with the law. Make of that what you will -
There’s a whole thread on this that was just started a few weeks ago
Try Google and it will bring you back here
Works better than the search in this site
I believe you can insure it and put not for hire in the window and run a log book
I’ve done that in the past but maybe I was illegal?
Had no issue with scales
I would look at running your business in another State
Florida insurance is pretty high -
Hey guys,
Thank you all for taking the time to give me some info on the matter, Gypsy I will be looking out to see what I can do as far as the running the business in another state, I did look into the bobtail insurance is it seems pretty simple. I also contacted a local FL state trooper and asked him, he told me as long as I have documents of truck sale I have 15 days to get it registered and tagged in FL, there wouldn't be an issue as long as it is insured, and no working.
Also thank you Badmon for the info you provided, although, the trooper i spoke with did recommend me to pull into the weight scale, he said at least in FL, they would just green light you, but skipping it sometimes makes them think your hiding something. He also mentioned that they can put notes on your driver license if you inform them, so if you do get pulled over once they scan the license they can see you contacted them and informed them of the truck being transported. Just FYI, I happened to run to the officer at homedepot, so even though he was a really nice guy about it, this doesn't mean someone out there might not be, and try to be a bad apple on the same case.
Anyways, thanks to both of you for your kind advice and light on the matter, it helped a ton!
