Absolutely! Familiarity with a paper map helps piece the entire puzzle of "how to get there" together in your mind. Alternate routes, elevations, choke points. You don't get that when you put your mind into neutral, and let the little box tell you what to do.

I have a Garmin nuvi, never let me down yet!
crusin -
My Nuvi, if not TOLD what route to take, would let me down 2-4 times a day. Minimum. The second you get to the local directions level normal GPS's are nearly useless for a CMV. I tell the GPS where I want to go and use it only for ETA and advanced sight of upcoming roads.

i plugged the address into my Iphone and it came right up, I just finished a trip from Missoula, to a drop in Rancho Cucamunga,Ca then onto sante fe springs and ending in lamirada. The guy i swas with had a garmin nuvi (car edition) BUT my Iphone gps (along with its MANY MANY other options it has) realy outshined his Garmin, I know that route wasnt a hard one to follow and any map would have gotten us there but it really gave me faith in my old IPhone, even though I still want to get the trucker edition of probably the Rand Mcnally I have read many other posts on the other thread here of the many problems wiht the RM gps..... I probably will still get it but my IPhone has never failed me in the last 3 years of .....getting me to a certain place.

none of them will do "everything" right but some will do most right, I have also been reseaching and it seems the Rand Mcnally seems to be good, even with its problems, the customer service it seems is the best and as everyone knows =......when electronics start having issues NOTHING beats being able to get a hold of someone to help you out. they also are doing constant internet updates.. and no I am not affiliated with the company LOL
-
I bought the RM motor carrier LARGE print----- the thing that bothered me the most about the laminated was the GLARE off the pages, the large scale pages are "coated and "tearproof" but NO glare which i liked better....
the problem.........it is thicker, heavier, and alot of states that are on 1 or 2 pages.......are on 3 -4 with the large scale....but sometimes that is a god thing... -
I was surprised at how many truckers have this on there laptops ( I ask alot of guys what they use) and steets and trips is very common BUT alos wiht its own issues, Rand Mcnally seems to be constantly comng up wiht solutions to its gps--- not sure if the other gps companies are as -- lets get er fixed

i broke down this morning and ordered the RM from dieselboss he seems to really know his stuff and was very helpful, he didnt seem to know about the forum but nonetheless he was very helpful, he also said the pc miler is actually a good unit as long as it is "setup" correctly but i still opted for the RM, I paid extra to have it overnited so I will get to play with it tomorrow

LOL. That's funny. You must have talked to the old man (Don Sr.) He knows these GPS's as well I as I do so you were in good hands, but he doesn't log into any of the forums. He updated your TND up to yesterday, but make sure you plug into a computer periodically because I see that Rand is still hard at work adding new features and enhancing the routing constantly. If you need a hand with it, just call.
