Good company to start with?

Hello, I have decided to change careers from construction to trucking. I have always been interested in driving a truck and getting out on the open road. I live in Mo. and have already got my CDL permit. I now have the diffecult task of finding a good trucking company that offers reputable schooling.
From what I have read and heard it seems all the larger entry level trucking companies have some issues, such as poor pay, bad equipment, long lay overs, and etc. I have read alot about the pros and cons of the many different trucking companies out there and still find my self confused to wich one is the best. There seems to be alot of argument on this topic and im sure it varies with personal experience.
What I am really after is a company that will pay for my CDL schooling, offer decent pay (not expecting to much as a beginner), average miles, safe background, reliable clean equipment, no hidden fees or suprises, honesty, but most importently to me I just dont want to end up with a company that takes half my check at the end of the week and dicks me around all the time.
Pay, home time, benefits and miles are not to important to me for now, as I would really only be using the company as a introduction to the industry for the first year. In short I would just like to find a honest, safe company with a good training program thats going to treat me like a person and not just a number for at least the first year then maybee longer if I like them.
If any one with actual long term veteran experience in the trucking industry has any suggestions or info to what the best and worst current companies are in the mid west area or schools in Mo., I would greatly appreciate it. Or have I just answered my own question, in that no one large company stands above the rest? So far I am cosidering PAM?
Please no disgruntled drivers just looking to slander a past employer or recruiters looking for a bonus.

Thanks for your help and suggestions:biggrin_255:

I'm going to start my Class A CDL training at Kirkwood Community College here in Cedar Rapids and am looking for a good company to gain some OTR experience. Hometime is a plus since I do have a family I don't want to abandon, and I won't drive teams. Personal preference. Any suggestions on where I should look? Thanks.

Yeah that's why I'm looking elsewhere. Don't really want to sign up with an unstable company unless I have to. Plus not sure if flatbed is my cup of tea, was hoping more for like a van style.

The pickier you're gonna be about things like home time and teaming (which you'll have to do for a little while as a newbie)the harder it's gonna be to find a job as a newbie, especially right now.

I don't mind teaming for training purposes, but as soon as I'm done with the trainer I wan't to go solo. I really like the 20/10 program through CRST, but the pay is low and it is teams. Wish other trucking companies had similar programs, but I'm not finding any. I don't mind being out for 2 or 3 weeks at a time, but 4 or 5 seems quite excessive to me. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Sorry if I'm too vague about times and dates but if the buttpirates that fired me figure out who I am they will most likely jerk me around again so here we go.
I was accussed of a horrible crime that was later proved false. I knew it was false but the b**ch that started the rumor got revenge on me by falsifying my DAC. Then I was fired for a minor company policy violation in retaliation. I finally got my DAC cleared and it did take awhile but, it's clean again.
So I am a 40+ year old married man with a CDL and Hazmat, Doubles/Triples and Tanker endorsements. I also have a F.A.S.T. card to go in and out of Canada. I have 7 Months of Multi State OTR Experience. No DUI, No Drugs, No Felonies, No Arrests. No Accidents and No Tickets.

I AM LOOKING FOR A HOME!

I want to stay somewhere for a long while, preferably retire there. I want to be an accident free million + mile driver with one company. I want to eventually become an owner operator with the one company.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions. I will also look at other sites to confirm some companies reputations. I also don't care if your company rewards you for finding new drivers but if you tell me to go and apply at Swift, I would tell you to go ###### yourself but, if you work there you have enough problems.

    Thanks to all,

    S. T. E.

Not sure that I can help you find a job but, I have a question for you. You said in your post that you were able to clean up your DAC. How were you able to do that, how difficult was it, how much did it cost you, and how long did it take. I really wish you could start a new thread on doing this as I'm sure a lot of drivers would love to read it. Thanks and good luck with the job search.

As a Student all company's that will hire you are pretty much the same. Swift, Schneider, Werner, Crete, Heartland etc. All haul the same stuff pay about the same it's up to you. You want to pull a dry van pick one and stick with it for 1 year. This has to be the best advice for any new guy, if you don't believe it now some day you will.
