I discovered I had to have a new background check when renewing hazmat.
Yes in my state. Renew or remove.

Here in Arkansas, our CDL is good for 4 years. If you have Hazmat, you have to renew it with your license. So fingerprints and background check every 4 years.

Why would anyone want to give up their Hazmat endorsement?

I'd keep it just for the TSA Precheck

Why keep something that comes with too much BS and never gets used?

If you aren't kidding, If someone doesn't pull HazMat keeping a valid HM is more trouble than it is worth, for some drivers. If you have a HM endorsement and notice you never need it, and you want to just let it expire, and your CDL is from a state that cancels your CDL unless you walk in and exchange it for a non-HM CDL, you can get a big surprise. I'm just trying to warn people if this trap before it happens to them. A driver could only find out his CDL is canceled months after it is canceled and he's getting some random DOT inspection or some 4-wheeler or truck driver hits your truck and the police show up. I was NEVER notified by my state or TSA. My employer was notified by letter a few months BEFORE my HM expired. If it didn't happen to me, I would not believe it possible. The govt doesn't have to make sense, they do what they do.

This is actually not new, in 2018 when I renewed mine, Colorado forgot to have me retake the HAZMAT test to retain it (despite me handing the clerk proof of my background check), 4 days later the state of Colorado suspended my drivers license, not just my CDL. I had no clue I was under suspension, fortunately I was doing Lyft on the weekends, their system caught the suspension and suspended my account and sent me a notice that my license was suspended.

In CommunistFornia, you need to get TSA (aka Lockheed Martin) PERMISSION by paying them to do a Federal BG Check on U B4 U take the HM test, and when U pass your HM Renewal test @ the DMV, the DMV will send U ur new 5 yr. license with Hazmat on it.
