The main thing is the viscosity and the grade. The newer engines like the lighter synthetic blend 10W-30.
The synthetic blend is durable and the lighter oil flows well.

And Detroit specifically calls for 10w30 in their engines.Another Canadian driver and Hegemeister Thank this.
-
So do the new Cummins and Paccar engines.
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
I noticed the 10w30; however, I have asked at speedco and they said they only have 15w40 bulk on all three brands offered.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

I have a 2017 freightliner cascadia dd13 and speedco and Detroit was completely out of the synthetic and simi synthetic oil so they recommend to use 15x40 Rotella. Since it's summer time the oil will break down with no problems. I put over 20,000 miles on this truck and the rotella did wonderful and I never had to put one drop of oil in 20,000 miles. Still Full!! This was recommended by Detroit Clark Diesel. This winter I'll go back with the Simi Synthetic. Hope this will help.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Stupid question, how much does a DD15 take when changing oil.
I am in Australia, so not sure if a DD15 is different out here, but the detroit parts store said 45 litres, google says around 45 litres, but all the mechanics I speak to say 38 litres.
The problem is, my engine has 2 dipsticks and they contradict each other lol, when u put 38 litres in one dipstick is over the full line and the other is well below.
45 litres and both are way overAnother Canadian driver Thanks this. -
Mine took 40 litres to get to the full line. If I bought two 20 litre Canadian pails it was right on the line. If I bought two 5 gal (18.9 litre) US pails I had to add two more litres to get to the full line.
Both cases with a new filter after running for 90 seconds and letting it sit for five minutes.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
If you have an intact dpf system you want low ash oil. That's where the dpf clogs come from.
uncleal13 Thanks this. -
Oil capacity seems to vary on most engines. Probably different oil pans based on application. Front vs rear sump, deep/shallow pan etc.
-
Yeah I think mine must be different as it's cab over, probably a different sump so you can drop it out or something, must be different to a bonnet truck.
Doesn't make it easy when there is two dipsticks that are different lol. I think I am just going to put 40litres in go from there.
