OTR companies that take on new drivers are going to make you sign a contract whether you go through their CDL school or not. Even 6 month drivers that already want to job hop from one mega to another are going to have to go through training again. Pick a mega with a yard close to home and consider the first year training. You don't learn everything from CDL school. You learn how to do a pre-trip, back, and not hit a curb driving around the block. You don't learn everything on the road with a trainer for a couple weeks ago. More than anything you're just a body in the seat earning the "trainer" some miles. So pick a place and put in your year and think of the entire year as a learning experience. Learn the country and cities, learn how to manage your clock, driving in different types of weather, etc. This can't be taught in a few weeks.
Looking for a decent school to start my career otr.

Wilson Logistics training is different from any other trucking company cdl school. You get the CDL-A Permit, then hit the road for 3 weeks with one of the CDL school instructors. No sitting around watching videos or driving around the parking lot. You're actually on the road learning OJT.
CDL Permit Driving
You will go over-the-road for 3 weeks with a professional CDL instructor for training and real-world experience. This training provides you with the information, tools, and skills to pass your Class A CDL road exam. Please note that this phase of training is extensive, and home time is unlikely during these 3 weeks.Another Canadian driver and Boondock Thank this. -

All CDL schools are teaching you one thing. How to pass the test. Because what the gubberment wants for you to pass. Is severely out dated.
Your 240+/- hours of training time with a starter company. Is going to depend on the quality of said company. You'll be just a team driver. At a bottom feeder. But you'll be taught things at a good company. The company I started with. Didn't allow you to be treated like a team driver. They ramped up your combined on duty hours each week. Had videos and tests you were required to pass. To move to the next stage. Plus required you to do two mountains and a NE dock.
I learned more about backing, inspecting the truck, managing my clock, and so more. Than I would have elsewhere.
Yes they charge you for school. But you can either work for them for a year or just pay it off.
So company paid CDL schools can be great. Just research who you're considering.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
Roehl is a company that does make you sign a contract for OTR training even if you got your CDL elsewhere. Maybe they have changed that but I doubt it.
There's a thread about it I'm there section in this forum.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
Im with Millis transfer currently out with my trainer. I went to their school in Carlisle, Pa. Paid training of $600 a week, for 3-4 weeks then out with your trainer for 15,000 miles. All miles are paid that you and your trainer complete. I'm very happy with my decision so far. A year contract or pay $2500.
