It's all a Canadian thing. They started this 62 mph or slower so now we have to follow their example. "Socialism sucks".

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Which companies are still running 70+?

Hell we are speed limited to 56 mph, some firms are already at 52 mph.
-
Note: Caution, thread hijack!

I firmly believe that the old 55 MPH federal mandate made more scofflaws out of otherwise law abiding citizens than anything since prohibition! That single law was the major thing that kept me from going to the highway patrol, instead of the sheriff's office. As a deputy, I could choose to enforce, or ignore traffic violations. And I can tell you that I never stopped a vehicle for nothing more than exceeding 55.
OK, now back to the thread.

I have an 85 mile an hour truck but drive 70.
-
I don't know how fast my truck will go. Had it up to 85 once, that was enough, still had more though.
-
Any small ma and pa trucking outfit runs ungoverned trucks.
-
I drive for a company like this.trucks are wide open but have speedometers that only go to 85 so beyond that is pure speculation.I have watched the tach continue to climb after 85 and things get real quiet at high speed. I guess that I average 70-72 mph but have what i need to get away from the clusters.
THAT is how I keep my sanity.
This is an interesting thread and i too wonder which companies still let their trucks breathe. One driver was typing about making that turn in 7 days and i was thinking what took him so long. I did ga to cali area and back in 5-6 days hauling carpet west and wine and / or garbage back east. This was mid 80's until 1994 when I swore cali off and started to run more reginal.
I was also much younger but did indeed begin to feel the effects of running like that.
I do hope this thread continues as it is interesting to read about those that have been there through the days of what i reference as chicken trucking and those that drive a truck as opposed to castrated freight haulers. I now pull grain and bakery waste that is turned into chicken feed. It is always needed yesterday.

I have my my 387's ecm set at 115 mph... I don't know if will do it and don't care! I usually run at around 64-70 mph depending on where I am. It is nice to get the hell away from a circus of company trucks when I have to, or actually get around the 4 wheelers who like to play games. But I usually keep it pretty safe and efficient out there.
We have an old 2000 Century that once/IF we get back on the road (Repairs And Compliance) that will most likely need a driver... She rolls about 87 mph, we do mainly west coast to Alabama and back. The driver would pretty much run like an O/O... ie.. be responsible for everything from managing up front fuel and repair cash to seeking out their own mechanics, truck maintenance, paper work, etc.. You will also be responsible for your own taxes. We can get the loads, but you will be in control of most other issues... including how fast or slow you operate the truck and how much money you actually save for yourself and us for each load.. It wont pay the best... 27-30% of the loads, for an average of around $800 for a 3 1/2 to 4 day trip, but after all, we pay fuel and all costs to the driver.. and it is our truck, trailer and authority. If we decide to put this truck back out on the road, I will make a post in the JOBs Section of this forum. This may be a good job for a savvy driver looking to see what it would be like to actually be an O/O without taking the risk. I am not 100% sure if we are gonna put the truck back out there, but if we do, I will let all interested here know.
I may as well tell you now, Only experienced O/O mind set type drivers should respond, for that is pretty much what you will have to be to make it at this. We are a fast paced refer company and we haul fresh tub to sub 0 frozen chicken and turkey products with very seldom a dry load... And being late is not an option!
As of this post, no repairs have even began on this truck.Last edited: Mar 10, 2010
