Do you have any insight into tanker companies that might put the new guy to work?

Well what you heard wasn't true at all. But the info you were told sounds typical if a OTR driver that hasn't been around the industry.

There are several companies that will take you on with your USAF tanker experience. And you can get on doing the same type of fuel tanker work. Just depends on who you apply to.

After you finish CDL school, get your CDL, and the endorsements. Your next choice will be do you want to be local, regional, or OTR. Here are a few companies that will hire you.

    Airgas
    Linde/Praxair
    Air Products
    Messer
    Matheson Tri Gas
Gemini (aka Loves) but its up to the regional manager when you apply
    Western International Gas
    Nalco
    PTI/Amerigas

There are some others that I cant think of right now. But basically alot of companies are receiving grant money to hire Veterans. So these companies will hire a vet over a regular person. Then train the vet on the operations and driving of the tanker.

As I tell people its beyond crazy to me to waste time. Because you can't get time back. And going to one of those mega companies for CDL training and experience is a pure waste of time. $600 p/week isn't worth being away from home. And I wouldn't even say $1000 p/wk is cool. There are companies paying $1500 or more per week. And the driver is either home or paid while doing a 34 away from home. And all this is available to a new CDL holder. People just have to know where to apply and leave those typical worthless Mega companies like Prime or Schneider alone.

60 miles south of the Rock? Some tanker work in the Camden area. The port in Pine Bluff too. Lots of companies down around El Dorado that run regional out and back runs. Fuel racks also in El Dorado, Little Rock and maybe the refinery in Smackover.
Central Arkansas Petroleum Transport is, I think, headquartered in Malvern but they run all over. With fuel experience, that's where I would try first.

What's your location? Depending upon the terminal you may, MAY, be able to qualify for Trimac's rookie progam given the right circumstances.

Uhh... you don't need to go to trucking school...

    https://www.dps.arkansas.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/skills_test_wavier_cdl_web_post_07112014.pdf

And some companies will count your military experience for hiring, too. Your screen name is what brought me in the thread... "USAF POL" tells me you operated fuel tankers in the Air Force, and "Ret" tells me you are retired. Your only hoop now is getting the waiver form completed by the Commanding Officer. Do you have rapport with your last CO? If so, call him up and send him the form. You might sve yourself a bunch of time and trouble... and get a job hauling fuel locally within the next month.
