That salary is tragically low for what the job entails. My saving grace was doing regional hourly from the start, which was an easy because somehow making 24 per hour seemed better than 38 cents per mile while sharing a truck with some dude. Average wage of 23-27 per hour at 40-60 hours nets a weekly pay of 700-1200, and it doesn't get much better than that accross other occupations either (just talking averages here, there's always that top 10% within any industry).

But you're right, the companies aren't investing in local people. The training schools are soaking up millions in government grant funds while the companies look overseas for employees that will stay only as long as theyre legally required before bailing on the industry entirely.

But yeah, GFS is the only viable option for a local person looking to get into class 1. That and towing.

I honestly wish I could just go back to being an electrician, that was prob the best job I ever had in my entire life, (better than Oil/Gas, Mechanic/Machinist or IT/Office Manager). But unless you're willing to go live on a cot in an ATCO trailer, or a couch in some basement for $1200/mo in Vancouver/Toronto, there is no work anywhere else, for anyone who wants to be paid the proper rates. Out here in Calgary, 10 year Jmen are working commercial for $25/hr no OT (we used to make $39-42+OT). I guess I will just have to make myself like this office gig, money is good, the ######## is 20ft thick tho, and 70% of the drivers are retarded.

Not at the places I’ve talked too, however, those were BIG companies.

I just got an email from a couple smaller outfits, and now we’re getting somewhere. Also they pay overtime (not banked hours or any of that ########) so will keep everyone updated. If you have any suggestions for places I should checkout, please share (commercial/residential in Calgary, no camp, no Ft Crack).

Yea, just like the driver shortage. Anyway, I'm still making more in the office here, if that changes, I will let ya know what electrical company I end up at, and how it goes. PCL sucks tho, same with Trotter and Morton, so scratch those off the list.

Yea, seems the smaller companies want to pay OT (not banked hours or other BS). Going to checkout a place called Western Electrical Constructors this week; looks promising.
