I wouldn't. You will break #### on this little engine. I have run high horse units before. They never last as long as lower power units.

yep, and to OP be careful asking these questions to mechanics you haven’t been working with. Real slimy people out there that’ll agree to anything you believe could be wrong.

like others have said, the lack of filters will almost always leave tiny metal shavings. I do my diffs every 150k trans usually 150-300k being that they’re old.

Oh i know its a stop gap until i can afford to transition to a 6nz. My current engine has been having issues...nothing critical yet but i can tell its coming. So i was going to do a full long block swap (namely full engine in paccar terms) as soon as i can get one and have it set to either 510 or 485 at time of order. So mid term plan is just do a like for like swap that i can get done for $36k installed including the non standard modification.....which funnily enough is only 6k more then a platinium rebuild anyway.

In the meantime though my transmission is my main concern.

I understand that. The reason why im concerned is the first time i had the fluid changed i had a LOT of shavings in the pan. second time 100k later there was more in the pan then at 500k and bb sized peices as well this last time there were cornflake sized peices and more material overall including dust then the last 2 times combined.....thats usually a good sign somethings not right.

I know how to work on cats, grew up around them and am more comfortable with them combined with a rather bad family history with anything cummins related lol.

So you know that all things cat cost twice as much, and are not twice as good?

You will destroy your MPG with a cat. That is a fact.

Depends on the context. Sure the parts cost more but knowing how to do pretty much anything that doesnt require a hoist will save a lot of money, i also own a pretty good chunk of the tooling already as handmedowns. Additionally most of my family uses cats, so between us we have a pretty good collective knowledge base and all of us can work on them.

Besides as i said cummins is cursed in our family. Nothing ever good comes from owning a cummins is a family saying lol...honestly though if i could find a pre emissions MP10 titan ive heard nothing but good things about those.....as for fuel costs trust me i know but by the same token i spent over 70k on emissions repairs my first year with a paccar. Ill takes my chances.

Ive never said paccar is a good engine, just every repair I see is emissions related. For OTR I wouldn't pay to replace it with anything else. If I wanted power, I would go get an X15. Snip snip of course.

Never said you did, i was refering to anything emissions related in general and using my MX as an example. So thats on me for lack of clarity. But as i said ill stick to my kittys, they may be gas hogs but i prefer them.

Don’t pay extra for the 485 program it’s the same torque as the 455 and only really provides extra power up higher in the rpm range.. only real difference we found was poorer fuel mileage, on the coq which is very long pull it was maybe 1/4 mile difference by the time we topped the hill..
