If pulled heavy and worked hard expect a dropped liner and will start pushing coolant some at 500, some at 700. Just depends. Lack of oil service or extended oil changes will leave the cam and followers in rough shape and scores/ galling will be present on the cam and rollers. Updated cam and followers are available to replace early engines with narrow rollers.

How would I troubleshoot a dropped liner issue? Cummins 2350 with 620k miles burning about 1 gallon of coolant every 2 weeks or so.

With a dropped liner you would be pressurizing your coolant system. Test your coolant for exhaust gases. Coolant loss could also be due to injector cups. Look for coolant in your water separator or a faulty injector code. It could also be your EGR cooler.

What is it with those engines and that noise like it’s about to throw a rod at 1300 or so rpm?

    Dual mass flywheel?

The story I heard with differences between the ISX and the X15 was the fuel pump and how it’s apparently isolated from the engine oil system. That way if the ceramic plungers grenade, the pieces don’t wind up in the oil.

the fuel pump is the same on the economy series as the ISX only with the updated parts and the improved oil bypass valve. Both the original pump and the nextgen pump on the performance series are both lubricated with crankcase oil.

Thanks. My first thought is my egr cooler because It is still the original one and Ive read many times on here they are notorious for going bad and using coolant. I will run some tests and report back

EGR coolers seem to have the bugs out. No where near as common as in the 870 and 871 series. Some of the newer round coolers have had early failures but they are few and far between.
