Gooberment nets. They are overconfident that if they leave or get fired Daddy government will save them.

Not if the government contract requires a Top Secret security clearance to haul the loads...

Or something as simple as entering Canada. I had to catch a flight from Atlanta to Detroit close to 20 years ago for the sole purpose of taking a load about 200 miles into Canada. The original driver was NOT a US Citizen and Canada denied him entry. Because being able to enter Canada was a job requirement the carrier had no other choice but to terminate him. I asked about that a while later. The driver was a legal resident of the US but his resident status at the time precluded entry into Canada. This is one area of law I have no understanding of.

Drivers come and go. Accident, failed drug test, death, family, cdl suspension, retirees? Give it some time, a spot will open.

Yes, even at small carriers, drivers are replaced semi-regularly. We have a truck opening in 10 days, our schoolteacher who drives every summer has to go back to class. We had one open last week, guy needed to go local due to family medical issues (Alzheimer's in the house), lost one to a heart attack and another to retirement in July.

Even here, with only 75 sleeper trucks, we lose about 2 every month, mostly medical and retirement. With that said, however, we can afford to be choosy. The megas? If they only lost 2.5% a month, they would rejoice... but they would still need up to 500 bodies every month to fill their seats.

EDIT: I just went back and looked up the carrier. If they only needed to replace 2.5% every month, that would amount to 282 drivers every month. I wouldn't worry about them not hiring this week, because next week they will need 65 more bodies. And the next week. And the next week. And that's only at 2.5%/month (an incredibly low 30% turnover rate per annum).

I beg to differ man. PTL is paying .70cpm if the driver has a minimum 5 months exp. doing SE regional @ 2,300 - 2,500 miles per week. Home weekends. That's hard to beat for company driver.

That reminds me when I got on with cfi a while back, there were a BUNCH of newbies hired and some were there weeks waiting for trucks and trainers. I guess they were just throwing a lot up against the wall to see who would stick. I got on pretty quick tho. It was their plan to weed out anyone who made a mistake.

Here are some different numbers, but the same premise:

USX/Variant has 6,058 drivers, and currently runs at a 150% turnover rate. That equates to hiring 9,097 new hires a year, or needing 175 new drivers every week to fill 5,428 trucks.

I have called drivers based upon lead apps and been told that they were not only bombarded by phone calls, but the callers never read anything past their name and phone number. I guess if my department needed to hire 175 drivers every week, we wouldn't have time to read beyond the names, either. It also makes me wonder exactly how large their recruiting departments have to be in order to process that many applications.
