Money supply measures like M1 used to be much more meaningful than they are today, simply because of the exponential increase in trade and international money flows.
The US government buys bonds, as in “quantitative easing”, and a bunch of that money finds it way quickly to Europe and Asia. Likewise, if goods in International trade become scarce, for whatever reason, an increase in demand in Europe means prices in the US go up.
This is the background for “new monetary theory” which tries to explain why we had low unemployment and low inflation, even when the money supply increased. Governments could go into deficit spending during full employment, and no inflation……because the economy could import labor as well as goods through off-shoring, in a seemingly infinite amount.
Well, now the cost of labor in China has shot up (it’s been more expensive than for example Mexico for almost five years now), and combined with the “supply chain problems”, we can’t import labor as cheaply anymore. And inflation explodes.Vampire and Rideandrepair Thank this. -

IDK, lots of times it's mostly a matter of 'what happened in my house this week'..
For my house, July and August were not great months. I just logged my first 2 weeks without being broke down for one reason or another. Fortunately, I try to keep my bills low and my savings high, so, I'll be alright.
But pitty the poor guy making $20 (yeah, $20) an hour or less. Gas is twice what it was 2 years ago. Restaurants have gotten to the point where I can not justify going there anymore, (lunch and a couple of drinks at Applebee's with my wife last week was $70......we both said no more). Food prices are crazy and rent is crazy as well.
Regardless of what the M1, M2, M3....and on and on and on and on say, real people are having real problems. And I feel bad for them.
I am truly, truly blessed. A dude gave me $30k for my truck last December and I found a really good local job and I haven't looked back.
I guess the best advice is what most of us grew up with; work hard. Save your money when you can. And don't accrue too much debt.
It works in trucking just like it works in life.Sirscrapntruckalot, larry2903, Constant Learner and 6 others Thank this.
