I’m fortunate to have 5 direct customers now.

1 of them requires my lowboy and flat both, one reason I don’t trade my flat off.

That particular customer is very big and builds bridges for the state. They have a set price they pay and that’s it. Good thing is, if you set 1 hour or 8 hours waiting to load or unload the $$ keeps flowing like sand through an hour glass.

Needless to say, if a person doesn’t know what it cost per mile to operate the truck, they most likely won’t figure out the rest of it… :)

Just bid on everything, doesn't matter what it is, at $20/mile.
If nobody else bids a single job, and they need it moved, scoop in and do it.
Heck if you run 5 days a month for the right rate, no complaints.

I hope you guys know the shippers usually analyze the spot markets and direct contract markets in order to determine what price they are giving you. See how if someone is manipulating the variables in the equation, it affects you also...even if you claim you use the cost plus method?

Anyone that has access to enter bids into a system should make a habit of entering high bids, daily...just saying. Brokers do the opposite so they can drive down rates while simultaneously increasing their margins...it's called business. I'm just trying to put the word out there so carriers can do the same.

For those of you that have direct customers, how do you think your customer determines their rate?

Any van owners: (or anyone) what rate would you give for Nashville to Salt Lake City, 4 days to deliver on a Saturday morning, 19k lbs, 45ft., and what else do you need to know to calculate a rate? Who wants to offer a lane for me to calculate?

    That’s exactly what I do :)
No way I’ll follow the herd and accept what’s being offered. Sure, I sit more than I would really like but when my truck is rolling, I’m smiling.
