Kenny Rogers' The Gambler starting playing in my head when I read about the part of the rancher recklessly trading commodity futures.

Back when I was a kid in the 80’s I always remember company men from the bigger processors flying in or driving in to inspect the feed lots and count heads every 2 or 3 months. Made sure everything was on the up and up. I guess they no longer do that?

I don't know how the big guys do it but it would make sense that they had some kind of continual audit going on.
My son and I run a few cows but we've never had any dealings with Tyson. We're just a small time outfit and they like to deal with the big guys. Well, they did anyway.
We've been shipping our calves to the same buyer for a long time. He comes up every year, walks the pens, and makes us an offer. We argue back and forth a little but it's mostly a formality. The people he's buying for give him a price range and he's always on the high side of the scale so I don't have any complaints.
We count them going on the trailer and the feedlot counts them when they unload. Plus, each load is weighed. It would be pretty hard to ghost anything. I'm thinking that cattle guy had himself a little inside help at Tyson

Yeah. Ghosting on a truck load would be hard unless it was one or two short per load and the receiver at Tyson wasn’t counting. That adds up after time.
The way it sounds is like he was telling Tyson he had say 7000 head on hand but in reality it was only 1000. So like you said Tyson either never once in that time sent someone to verify or that someone was in on it.

InTooDeep, mjd4277 and REO6205 Thank this.
