My favorite is when I ask if they'd rehire the person and their answer is "Not even in a parallel universe!".
I don't list it quite that way, just check a no by the question.

I've heard similar. In fact, there is a certain geographic region with a certain set of nationalities with a certain accent running companies that I have never heard a good word spoken about a previous driver (and most time they make claims of truck/load abandonment). Those go in one ear and out the other with zero consideration, as they are worthless for anything beyond dates of employment.

I love hearing when a small company's owner says they wish they could get a driver back. That's when I know they know they screwed up and this is a guy I want on staff to stick around for the long haul.

Would you hire this person again, usually is a good question to ask.

I have always been very carefull to gauge the person I am asking these questions to. Have found many issues with management and them being very narrow minded and sometimes even vindictive for reasons sane people can’t even imagine.

There's not much you can do about a vindictive former employer except to recognize one when you find them. Judge their responses accordingly.

I'm just going to go ahead and say it.. there are a LOT of drivers who need to be blackballed and the whole industry needs to be warned about them. They show up, act like some sort of commodity, prove almost instantly that they are a waste of time and money. They normally perform poorly (way below any level of basic service to the customers) and don't pack even the most rudimentary level of what can barely be called "skill". And they couldn't find the words, professionalism or craftsmanship in the dictionary.

    Agreed.

Yet some are better than you might ever guess.

Recently trained a woman to do heavy haul, she exceeded my every expectation daily.
She only has 5 years driving experience, and not hauled heavy equipment before.
I'll bet my money on her against anyone else who has twice as many years driving experience.
