My 2cents, sounds ####y. I've seen attachments to powered industrialized equipment that befuddled many experienced workers ESPECIALLY in the food manufacturing industry. Superfluous see ChinaTowns and tscottmes EXCELLENT advice!

    Well said!

It will happen, that's progress! Just not in our lifetimes (hopefully). Personally speaking in my old manufacturing industry we said things like:
    Robots can't production weld
Batteries don't have the capacity and can't replace LP
Robot tuggers cant safely move product across complex and ever changing shop floors

    All wrong.

Thank you everyone for all the responses!

Doing all the research on self driving trucks, it seems it would be extremely foolish for me to even try to get my CDL at this point in time. It’s so depressing, but these companies are operating and they are going to make it happen.

TuSimple, besides having a stupid name, had a minor crash with very little injuries that truckers are calling a failure when it is not at all. For some time Waymo has been able to respond to law enforcement pulling the trucks over and have pulled over multiple times. Scales won’t even be a thing as they will just automate that too.

It’s not just a few pipe dream startups anymore. There are countless companies with real trucks driving real freight with no driver on board right now in the US and all over the world. China’s self driving trucks are in full production now and go to mass production by 2024. Australia has had them for some time too. Walmart has their delivery trucks running right now with no driver and they are pushing hard to make this happen.

Everyone makes the argument “well what about snow” or fog, or tires going flat. That will be solved in the next year and lanes in the southern states are being taken over as I type. Tire pressure monitoring systems? Autonomous freight is running right now with no driver all over the place.

Not only that, Walmart has unlimited money, Waymo is backed by Google and TuSimple is already worth billions. EVERY MEGA CARRIER is pushing hard for these and will do anything not to pay a driver, or pay someone $15 an hour to sit and look out the window. Kodiak, Embark are all running autonomous freight with the likes of CH Robinson cheering them on delivering fully autonomous loads with no one on board right now.

They say they will have “transfer hubs” and drivers will take over locally, but only until 2025 when fully autonomous city driving for semi trucks is the norm and is being promised by these companies. It’s going to happen and happen quickly.

Why did they go after truck drivers so hard when there are tons of industries they could shut down. If there is really no driver shortage, then why not take out accountants? I know I asked because I had a reckless driving conviction, but I did not get in an accident and was not drunk driving. I guess it is all accidents and fatalities pushing these companies to eliminate drivers. It is really sad and my dreams are crushed. Good luck to all the drivers out there!

@BernieOH - You must make the decision, but in my opinion, you're throwing away a good opportunity for a trucking career.
15 or 20 years from now, you'll see big rigs cruising down the highway with drivers driving them and you'll day dream "I wish I was doing that."

What job don’t they want to automate? Only thing constant is change. Not saying the if’s wrong but the when’s usually are.

    .

It seems as if you came here to espouse our driverless future and weren't seriously considering it as an occupation let alone taking other seasoned drivers (not me) advice.

As a rookie driver, fresh out of cdl learners school:eek:, I'm here for that advice you so cavalierly blow off.

Carrier school advantage is you have a job after the school. Disadvantage you are "locked" into that company for a year lest you pay them back in cash for the training they provided.
Independent CDL school you are not locked into a company for a year so after you get some drive time if you do not like it you can move to another company. Independant school disadvantages you pay the cost or get student loans, grants etc., so may be cost prohibitive. A good school should have job placement assistance, but it is not guaranteed.
Only you know your situation and know what would work best for you. The ticket was over 5 years ago so it may prevent a few employers from hiring you but others will be just fine.

I absolutely did not mean to be insulting. I had this great plan to sell all my things and go “homeless” to drive for a year to travel the country and earn money due to the position I am in and keep driving but move to a new location after a year. I was pretty set after hearing I had a chance of being hired, but the more research I did the more depressing the idea became. I feel extremely bad for drivers right now and I’ll never get to do something I’ve always really wanted to do.

Good luck to you and I hope they don’t come as quickly as they say.

I didn't take offense, sad really to see you talk yourself out of it.
Several reasons vehicles will not be autonomous anytime soon.

#1 - Liability. Elon is walking a tight rope and settling many lawsuits out of court and with NDA's. The NHSTA has caught wind of it and is lobbying for more autonomous transparency. There are so many legal implications i'm not qualified to discuss. But trying to get lawyers to ever agree on anything? Good Luck.

#3 - Infrastructure. No one wants to pay for it and often times eminent domain is the only way to make it happen. The examples you provided of it working today are perfect case scenarios. Roads built/wired for autonomy.

#3 - At least in our country, poor internet saturation of 5g. Interconnected devices and A.I. will make autonomous transportation happen. Waymo has it figured out more than people realize and is easily Teslas only competition. Tesla has some decent mapping i'm sure but Google has been in the game much longer. We've been using Google Earth longer than Tesla has been a company.

At the very worse case scenario trucks are going to need an alert babysitter that actually knows how to drive. If no one gets into the occupation because the robots are seemingly winning then guess what happens to the pay scale $$$. It's already a hard enough job and the costs are easily passed on to the consumer.

I wish you well in your journey!

My daughter will die of old age before she will be replaced by a self driving truck.

Stop worrying about things that you don't need to be concerned about.

Come north if you are truly concerned, trucking here will always need drivers.
