Every couple of years, some nut job from downstate floats the idea of making Chicago/Cook County it's own state. They're tired of the wack a doodle rules being imposed upon them by Chicago liberals and being "over taxed".

Then they get reminded that for every dollar in taxes they spend, they get $1.78 back while Chicago and it's suburbs get $.98 back. The numbers get farther apart once you calculate in local taxes, federal ear marked spending, and the IMRF contributions that CPS makes that benifit none of its employees.

If the west coast and the NE became their own countries they would survive just fine while AR, AL, FL WV, and MS would have to make some very difficult fiscal decisions.

 

If California will decide to be own state all you have to do it's to push boundaries out of Colorado river , cut electric and oil supplement) and California will ask to come back to USA within a year.

 

Meh,some of those folks in Southern Illinois are just upset because they wish they could be part of Kentucky!lol

 

It's not California that wants to leave. Its people in other states that want them out.

 

I think they would do just fine .
All the federal tax dollars are just dollars that were stolen from the citizens of the states and returned to the states with lots of strings attached.
They steal it and then say , here, you can have your money back if you do as we demand .


the states would be fine, they’d just eliminate all the free handouts that the fedgov requires.
No more money for sitting at home doing nothing . no more spending thousands of hours meeting federal regulations , etc etc
Illegal immigrants cost every state many tens of millions every year
illegals don’t pay a dime in taxes yet cost truckloads of taxpayer money for education healthcare housing etc etc



The states would be able to deport all the illegals and stop spending millions on housing and teaching their kids and spending billions every year in the healthcare for illegals etc .


Florida would be in better shape than most states .
Plenty of retirees with money that don’t need jobs .

California would be bankrupt in no time without all the federal money.

but it’s really not a state verses state issue

it’s urban liberal verses suburban and rural conservative

urban liberals want to hand money out for free to everyone , money that’s stolen at the point of a fun from the people who are stupid enough to still be working for a living instead of cashing a welfare or SSI disability check every month .
Urban liberals want homeless living in tents everywhere ,
Homeless bums can set up a tent on the sidewalk and live there but you try parking in front of an expired meter and A govt employee with a gun will write you up and demand money,

they want ME to obey the law while all the illegals and homeless get to break any law they want .
I’m tired of paying income tax and car insurance while the illegals don’t pay either .

mom tired of paying parking tickets while homeless bums camp for free on the same street .
I’m tired of obeying speed limits because cops are sitting there watching all day , yet the same cops won’t arrest someone for shoplifting and stealing .

Stealing under a thousand dollars ? Not a crime .
Driving 12 over ? O that’s a serious crime involving govt employee with guns demanding money or you get locked in a cage .

Im just tired of the feds stealing my money and coming after me for every minor infraction while they hand out my stolen money to people who are too lazy or too drug addicted to work .

im just tired of it .
And if there was a state that said “no more , we are sick of your never ending regulations and rules and requirements and stealing our citizens money and then demanding we enact certain laws so we can have our own money back , we are out of here “

California pays more in federal taxes than it gets back.

Florida receives more in federal funding than it pays in.

When you look at domestic trade between the several states, California is a net exporter, Florida is a net importer. Please note I said DOMESTIC trade.

Going back to the Chicago/Illinois example. If the city of Chicago didn't have to spend any tax dollars to Springfield and kept it, the city would be debt free inside 5 years and could then ELIMINATE the city sales tax.

 

Yeah now look how CHEAP RESORSES California GETTING from rest of USA, oil, gas, food etc (have fun growing anything without Colorado riiver) .
Don't forget that Cali will need to build up it's own army, or you think rest of USA gonna defend hipsters from China for free?

 

First of all, you can't just magically eliminate the Colorado River. Assuming a peaceful split, the river would be governed by treaty based on current water rights, much like the Duro, the Elbe, or the Lyse.

Secondly, yes CA imports goods from the rest of the country. The value of the goods that California DOMESTICALLY imports is less than the value of the goods it DOMESTICALLY exports. Assuming trade relations similar tk US/EU trade agreements, California would easily be able to pay for their imports. Assuming US/Cuba style relationship California would easily be able to transition to a self sufficient economy, even without taking into account global trade - much easier than the rest of the US would be able to handle losing California's food. Remember that California is the 10th largest economy in the world.

Moving on to the military. California is top 5 in terms of new armed forces recruits. When scaled for population size, it drops out of the top 10. If you compare to average unemployment rate, it's back in the top 5 (for perspective N Dakota goes from dead last to top 10 when you do this). I forsee no issue with California being able to staff and fund an armed forces capable of defending its borders. A much easier time than say, Arizona, who if each state became it's own country would quickly be carved up by its neighbors.

And again, it's not Californians looking to secede. It's esteemed members on here who are looking to FORCE Cali out. On paper, California would be better able to handle being cut away than the rest of the US would handle its loss.

 

Believe that’s the grand plan

 

Florida would be fine without the federal money.
That would also eliminate all the onerous federal regulations .

the state would deport the illegals that cost billions and don’t pay taxes .
They have plenty of sunny weather and beautiful beaches and amusement parks and tourist destinations to get by just fine .

you ever heard anyone say they wanted to retire and move to New Jersey or Michigan ?
