Im selling trailer thats not paid off. Buyer has to wire money to out of state lender and they will mail him title. Can he pull the trailer back to his home state with bill of sale only? Thats what my lender says. Thanks in advance and happy trails

Registration fees must be paid before any vehicle can run down the highway. This can be a permit or temp "in-transit" permit which costs $$$. A bill-of-sale is NOT a permit. I don't know of any state you can drive "legally" without paying the fee. But, running this trailer behind truck probably wouldn't even be noticed.

I would have him make a phone call to the state it is going to be registered in and see what he needs to do.

    NJ has 4 year registrations.
One of our lift gate trailers 'lost' it's plate at a little over 2 years.

When the renewal arived, I gave the manager a card for MVC to go get a new plate before I retired.

The other day I was asked about it, again, that makes over 3 years use in North NJ, NYC and Long Island without a license plate.

Your mileage may vary but LEO will usually focus on the tractor reg and insurance and ignore the trailer.

Unless you know the buyer , it's better to wait until the lender gets the money and then for you to sign a Power of attorney for the lein holder to sign your name on the title to be sent to your buyer?

    No.

I once pulled a just purchased used tanker trailer with nothing but whatever papers the dealer gave with the trailer. From New Jersey all the way along 80 to California.

    Nobody stopped me.

I pulled 3 brand new flatbeds from manufacturer in Arkansas I think it was to Montana. Nothing but the papers.

    Nobody stopped me.

One could argue that the 2 flats stacked on the one being pulled could be freight.

The trailers were empty. No loads were pulled till they got registered. And numbered.

My understanding with the flats company was they had to be numbered to be legal. I don't know if that's a otr thing or what. Half the trailers I'm pulling now don't have numbers but they don't leave the state.
