Years ago, I used to do the drive 5, sleep 4, drive 5, sleep 4 thing. Well, on paper anyway.
In real life I'd never have been able to operate that way. It did allow me to log some fantastic mileage though.
Under the old rules, my company allowed us to log at 50 mph. If I didn't split my log, I could only show about 500 miles per day. Then I was introduced to the magic of 5/4/5/4... bingo--725 miles per day!
There were a couple of disadvantages to this however. One being that you'd be up against your 70 much sooner. The other being that it was really impractical to actually sleep 4 hours then get up and drive for 5. Maybe it was... ahem... not quite legal... but I always drove when I was awake and slept when I was tired--fitting the log to the trip after the fact. I was RARELY tired behind the wheel when I drove 48 state--I got more than enough sleep. But I had to run multiple logs to make that happen.
I've recently downloaded a copy of Driver's Daily Log and I'm gonna play around with a few scenarios to see what the advantage is compared to the old days--I haven't had to log under the new rules yet. -
Oh, now there's a thought. I should download the trial version of DDL and see what split breaking is on it. I'm definitely going to have to take Logs up on the offer though and go down there and have her teach me split breaking. Even though I don't work for them, hubby does, so if I learn it, I can teach him how to do it. I'm definitely going to have to check out the DDL program though. Thanks Lil, I never even thought about that till I read your post just now.

Great let me know what you come up with! However you have to remember it's more likely going to be used due to some issue (5 hours waiting for loading/unloading/traffic etc) or possibly a tight run and splitting would allow you to make the delivery on time. Now one driver swore by splitting because the 2 hours each time would help him arrive sooner which means he arrives before another driver and gets that load where the other driver doesn't get there first and loses the load.

DDL doesn't necesarrily teach you split breaking, but you can make out different logs to see when you are legal and when you are not! You can try it out for 60 days. It's a log program to do your logs on, which I do allow my drivers to use this program and it's awesome

DDL came up with all kinds of violations when I split the break the old way. VIOLATION VIOLATION VIOLATION.... DO NOT PASS GO... DO NOT COLLECT $200

I don't do that sort of thing... it causes hair to grow on your palms.

What about E logs or computer logs. Not all e logs compute split breaks.
