Hello all, yes this is my first post, but many hours of observation:biggrin_2558:I have an small excavation bussiness & have always hired out the dump trucking, but find I need the evil necessary now. I have aquired a prodject- 97 pete 378, that came w/ '05 acert on crate. orignal eng.was 3406e 410 hp w/ allison hd4560 6spd trans---so this is my last email to local cat engine tech/rep. DDS this might be up your alley! thanxs to all in advance!!
Tom, I still have not made decision on wether to use the c-15 acert Serial # mxs 62100 in my dump truck project. I have spent countless hours researching truck forums, and this is what i have learned so far! - the acerts need to run # lower rpm's (1400 hwy, down to 1100 on hills) than previos 3406e's in order to mantain acceptable fuel milege & engine wear. I understand some ser. # c-15 acerts had warranty issues w/ rocker arms/shaft breaking, turbo mtg bolts, Injector accuators, & few other minor problems. Most forums state that these engines are covered up to 800k. is this the case w/ my engine? has this engine had any updates/warranty work already done? I believe engine has low miles/hrs as it was wrecked somtime in 2007
Last issue- my dump has 5.29:1 drivers w/ 24.5 tires. If i install an 18 spd. trans. will engine rpm # 55-60 mph be unexceptable for this engine combo?
thanks again for your help, please advise at your convenince

Your gearing will be way off . I run 11r24.5 s 3.70s with a 15over and am at 1500 at 62 MPH the 18 is a tiny bit taller but not enough

Ps- 3406e caught fire but trans. untouched & just gone thru before fire. I would love to find another 6ts to replace & keep allison (then my daughter could help!!) but allison is only good for 1450 ftlbs. the c-15 is 1650 # 475 hp. my delima is the c-15 has only 40k miles. just looking for input.. thanks

my thoughts are find any 3406E, 5EK, 6TS, or 1LW and trade the acert for it........especially if you can find one with a recent rebuild. You can always have the ECM reflashed to the power level you need to match the transmission

Is fuel mileage really a concern? I know that might sound like a dumb question to most but dump trucks are not know for OTR. A friend has 8 6axle dump trucks and most hauls are less than 50 miles round trip. I would just think that the cost of swapping gears would never be paid for in fuel savings. Especially if most roads are 2 lane (not averaging 70mph).

Just thinking out loud but by the time you swap engine, trans and/or gears that better be a real nice truck not to just keep shopping.
