I recently purchased a 2006 peterbilt 379. After having the clutch adjusted I have no throw in the pedal. I have about 3 inches of free play and the hex rod has no more adjustment left. The problem is that now the clutch is either in or out by moving the pedal maybe a quarter of an inch, but works fine otherwise. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is it a self adjusting clutch? Why did you mess with the linkage? 3 inches of free travel is about twice what you should have. 1.5-2” is what it should be.

Not self adjusting. The mechanic said the adjusted the linkage to try to reduce the free play.

Find a shop that understands and knows how to adjust a clutch correctly.

These old 379’s the linkage can be worn and have a lot of slop in a lot of places if they have been neglected.

Mechanic doesn't know what they're talking about. Adjust at the clutch itself, then adjust the linkage ONLY if needed to compensate for wear.

You need a different mechanic. Did you take it to the TA?

Do they have the heim joints like kenworth does? I replaced all the linkage ends on my T660 and that was a PitA

Yes, they do on the adjustment link and on the clutch box linkage. They get seized up and can be a bugger to get freed up to adjust. In the case of the OP, either the clutch box is trash from lack of grease or the fork/cross shaft bushing are.

I looked everything over last night and the bushings where the rod goes into the bell housing are trashed.

I had one give me fits. Did a clutch job with all new parts on a 379. A complete clutch job, unlike most perform. Couldn't get measurements right. Well come to find out, previous owner, or mechanic shortened the octagon aluminum link, and rethreaded it. Why it looked fine to me. Ordered a new one and held it up, it was obvious. I felt like a dink.
