Why did we stop using a single giant battery, and now use 3 tiny batteries?

I lift weights and can deadlift 450lbs for 5 reps so 4 batteries ain't too bad. Not even a full 5 rep set lol.

What truck is running group 24 batteries? Group 31 has been the industry standard for decades now.

Group 31 is 5 percent greater capacity. My last purchase I don't know what I got, 3 of whatever cost $89.

I’d like to see 4 group 24 in your battery box. How did you rework the hold downs?

They could be group 31 for all I know. My hold down is simply a bar going across the top of all three batteries

Here's the answer to the title of the thread. Industry standard. It has to do with what is the best fit in the most vehicles (a lot of them commercial but not necessarily trucks) so over time battery OEM's make more of these which makes them cheaper/easier to make which bleeds over in to how the trucks are made (the actual battery trays designed to hold them) which bleeds over in to what dealers/truck shops are most likely to supply because they buy them by the pallet.

I like 4d batteries and put them in lots of stuff but it might make more sense to ask why water doesn't flow uphill.

Really old trucks sometimes had 6v batteries wired in series to get 12v.

The main reason for group 31 is availability and standardization. Group 31 is used in pickup trucks, farm equipment, and all types of construction equipment. They are universal because of you just have a smaller engine to start you can use 1 battery, and just keep adding barriers at electrical needs increase for bigger vehicles.

A main improvement for class 8 trucks would be to switch to 24v. 24v starts a big engine so much better than 12v, you can use smaller wiring, and you don’t have near the voltage drop running wire long distances.
