The maximum a 5th wheel truck trailer combo can be is 65 ft. but a stinger steered truck trailer combo can be 75ft.A stinger 5th wheel is mounted to the rear of a 10 car hauler so that the total length can be 75 ft. Why wouldn't it be best to mount a stinger 5th wheel on the rear of a tandem axle sleeper 20-24 ft. box truck, for instance, and mount an additional stinger steered 40ft trailer behind THAT FOR A TOTAL of 75 FT LENGTH?? WHY don't we see more of this or ANY OF THESE
A different example would be to make a combination that resembles an enclosed 10 car hauler that uses the low mounted stinger 5th wheel for the trailer. Instead of hauling cars however, you could drive a forklift through the trailer, onto a ramp, into the front box, and maybe even load items into the area above the driver cab. This trailer combination would have approx. 5800 cu.ft. area. A 53ft. trailer only has about 3600 cu.ft. area. resulting in a 60% increase in cargo area. WHY isn't this used more often.
Taken one step further, these enclosed car haulers have two levels. If my above scenario was designed with two levels with a conveyor belt for the skids, there'd be very little wasted space, and a total loading length of 60ft(bottom)plus 75ft(top) = 135 lineal ft X 5.5 ft. tall (twice) X 8.2 ft. wide. (2700 cu.ft. bottom) 3380cu.ft.top = 6080cu.ft.total

a good example of a truck to start with would be this one and install a low stinger 5th wheel onto it >>>>>>

Right on, check what these kind of rigs are specced for in terms of load weight.... especially the "upper deck". Your average car weighs approx 3000 pounds which could easily be equalled by 3 or 4 pallets of canned goods in a much smaller and more concentrated area. So a 3 car "upper deck" would therefore be restricted to 12 pallets or so spread out over the deck area. Bottom deck not much more.

Of course this would be another problem because neither deck could handle the weight of a forklift, so how ya gonna load/ unload?

Figure that all out and then look at the height of your bottom deck from the ground. Know of any loading docks that low?

Before you get all busy figuring hydraulic floor lifts and the like remember hydraulics are heavy so we just reduced your payload again.

Nuhuh, leave the specialized equipment to the specialized uses they were designed for.:biggrin_25513:

think about this...it would have to have a dolly on the back of the straight truck, then a trailer.....you would have to break down the set to put both the trailer and the straight truck in the dock...BUT, in order to put the trailer in the dock you would have to back into the dock with the dolly attached, and ask anybody whos tried to back doubles before....PITA

two good points, I guess it would have to be side loaded, not very practical huh?
