Heres the thing. Any emissions issu.....err i mean truck can be a good one if you maintain it correctly from day one. If you do your downtime will likely be reasonable and you wont have too many more problems then an equivlent old iron with about the same level of risk of a lemon as the old irons had back in the day.....current computer shortages and QC issues aside

The problem is many of these used emissions trucks stop getting maintaince which tends to be spotty at best due to the big fleets still treating these trucks like old iron where you do an oilchange every whenever it gets done and their fine. As a result when these trucks approach end of warranty and are then flipped for newer units or are being traded in at end of warranty due to being problem units usially due to poor done or missing maintaince. This means its not unusual and more common then not for these 500kish units to be in poor shape and/or have a plethroia of slipshod and cobbled temporary repairs.

If you get a used one from someone who took good care of it it will easily go to 1 million as long as YOU keep up on it. Or you get a slipshod one see my own truck as a perfect case in point. Im which case be prepared for tens of thousands in repairs and down time and tows.

However what makes paccar considerably worse then others is how heavily locked down they are and how much of a premium they charge. Most other brands even volvo and mack can at least be diagnosed and repaired with just a Jpro and the general repairs are not too horible. A full emissions system for a volvo is likely in the 30-50K range assumeing the ENTIRE system needs replaced. Paccar however requires extremely expensive davie 4 software which is only sold as a SUBSCRIPTION to do even basic repairs and diagnoseing, it also requires the computer software be online at all times. This means its pretty unlikely a tech can roll out to the side of the road and clear codes or even that YOU can clear codes so you can limp it to the nearest shop.

Instead you will often need to be towed long distances if your unlucky and need to wait however long you need to at the shop with this software. With other brands you can at least have the option to limp it to pretty much any other shop so you arent waiting 2 to 4 weeks just to be seen in many cases if your unlucky or having to be towed all over gods green earth.

Addtionally most other brands have a large aftermarket parts selection. So even if you cant get X branded parts there are many good established alternitives. With paccar many of these off brand parts are pure chineseium grade junk and as likely to cause new and worse issues as not. See the chinese turbo that was mounted to my truck prior to my getting it as yet another case in point. Or the waterpump, or the altinator or my AC compressor or a dozen other examples from this rig.

Are paccars a bad truck? No, the engines themselves are likely in the top 2 or 3 most reliable on the road today. They also have some of the most comfortable trucks on the market. Where you run into issues is the emissions systems on paccars paired with their locked down software and generally "you takes your chances" level of aftermarket parts and extreme cost for parts and repairs are what makes them a considerably worse option then most other brands. Remimber paccar premium is a saying for a reason.

I’m not exactly sure where you’re headed with your post or why I’m quoted?

It was directed at your comment of MX13s being as good as other powertrains and unreasionable expectations. The gist is that yes any truck can be good or bad but paccars are considerably worse then others especially the used ones due to how locked down they are compared to other brands, lack of self service and the lack of good consistant quality aftermarket parts and limited places to service them leading to multi week waits where other brands can go elsewhere.

Ill be honest im likely not being as clear as i could be and thats my fault. I broke 2 teeth yesterday and am here at home self medicateing with until they can see me monday.

“FWIW, both, my current and previous employers stopped buying red and everything is MX13, now.

Every powertrain has its issues. You’re just not going to get around them, anymore.

Most here have such unreasonable expectations, which can never be met. Whether the truck is new or used, they always dream up some kind of negativity. If you’re comfortable with it, buy it.”

^^^ Nowhere in there did I say the MX13 is as good or infer they were anything more than the rest. You might re-read my statement for what it is and not read into it.

"my current and previous employers stopped buying red and everything is MX13, now"

"Every powertrain has its issues. You’re just not going to get around them, anymore."

I took these two as stated to mean your saying all of them are equal or as i directly said as good as key point being "as good as". Infact as read with the two sentances directly next to each other it implys your saying they or more specifically all powertrains are more or less equal. Hard not to with how you stated it.

Both are direct statements; nothing more. You’re the one who read into them or mistook them. Not my deal, man.

I have a 2017 mx13. 606k miles and no real issues with it.
I did a turbo 30k miles ago, it’s made by Cummins.
Other than that just normal maintenance so far.
I have had it tuned to 550 hp and 1950 tq,
As for fuel mileage I haul a 3 axle double drop and mostly over sized, so I can’t comment on that aspect..

I don’t think you’re going to get that Truck for $15k. Maybe $30k. Even scrap wrecked Trucks sell for $8-$10k and up. If you could get it for $15k, probably make a killing parting it out.

I would bet they want 40 to 50k for it. They are great motors once you put them through a weight loss plan.
