Ah, Germantown.. And its 40 MPH speed limit 6 feet past the City Limits sign on US 72 coming in at 65 from Mt Pleasant. Me going in. Buick Roadmaster blew me sideway passing.. He had TN plates . Patrol car coming out, me say he gonna get your az. No got mine. They ticket you and take your license. When you mail
back the bounty, they mail you your licence. Ticket can be used to show the next officer as proof you have license. It has a sort of guarantee paragraph on it the tells the then viewing officer where your actual license is and the accompanying info on the ticket explains why....Very impressive to the officer as he writes you one of his.
At that time , Germantown was a highly desired property area. It had only two of three retail shops in a short strip just past a service station. High class population did not allow any industry or common kwik shops, produce stands. etc. It financed its city service on fees for curb cuts to the lot you were building on and hook up fees for water and sewer. Then,when you built a house, the property tax kicked in. A friend once told me before he moved out, his tax bill
matched his mortgage payments.
This is long, but I swore at the time, I hoped to live long enough to see Germantown full of houses, nothing to collect fees on, and tax get so high people moved away. I have succeeded to an extent. Collierville and Mt. Pleasant have grown nicely.
