A year in and I'm realizing how little I know about this industry on a grand scale...it's been all focused on driving.
-
Hell I'm 10 years in and I still don't know anything.JoeyJunk, D.Tibbitt, ducnut and 1 other person Thank this. -
I used to pick up at some places where Walmart trucks also loaded. They would then go to one of their DC's. And they would always get a door right away. Money talks.

It's called logistics, product is manufactured, product needs to get to retailer to sell. It could go direct to retailers store or to a distribution center. W/M of course sells a lot of stuff and they need distribution centers to store it. So store number 123 needs 50 pairs of boys jeans 1/3 of a pallet, and 4 pallets of motor oil, and 4 pallets of dog food, and 20 bicycles etc, all these items can be picked from distribution center by 1 truck and delivered to store 123. Or, the 50 pairs of boys jeans could be shipped from manufacturer direct to store 123 VIA LTL carrier or UPS. Large co's can control their transportation system easier by having their own equipment firstly, and using contractors as back-up secondly.
JoeyJunk, D.Tibbitt and dave01282000 Thank this. -
Often they contract out the heavy or difficult stuff plus stuff that is out of the way ..
dave01282000 Thanks this. -
Wilson is contracted to PRIME like SWIFT, CRETE, and a few others are contracted to Wal-Mart. It's all about keeping the supply chain flowing. That being said Wal-Mart is hiring and hoping to phase out 3rd parties delivering to stores, word is they just cut CRETE by 10%.dave01282000 Thanks this.

That is exactly right. The piss poor service walmart gets from these companies is unbelievable.

I hauled out of the Wintersville OH DC in 2008/2009. Schneider had the contract. At that time it was rare a private fleet would pull a load out. If they did, it was a dry load drop and hook, no multiple stops. Marten has the contract now. Not sure what else changed. Haven’t been by there in a long time.

Actually they are more like a lease operator. Like DSL is to Swift and Eagle is to Werner, exclusive to the carrier they are contracted to.
