Looking to buy the Droid, I love Verizon's coverage and have had then for years.
Now I want a newer phone. Is the Droid worth all the hype?
I am hoping for a compter that also makes phone calls. Is that asking too much of that phone?
What about other items? Battery life? Functionality? weird quirks?
Please your thought are welcome here. I have a little experience with smartphones, in fact, I am on my LG Navigator typing this post! Will the Droid surprise or disappoint me???
Thanks in advance.
The new Verizon "Droid"??? your opinions pls!!!

I've been waiting for the iPhone to hopefully come to Verizon myself. But in the mean time I am in the market for a used phone (not eligible for upgrade and don't want to waste it if they do get the iPhone). So I am looking for a smart phone for the time in between. Last night was my first time playing with a Motorola Droid. WOW! That thing is cool. It does a lot of cool stuff. It's got me thinking if I find one I might not want an iPhone. Not sure though.
I like all the apps that Apple has available. Although other phones are starting to catch up. My night driver has the Blackberry Storm 2 and loves it. It rates at a 4.5 out of 5 by customers. The original Storm was junk, but sounds like they fixed those issues. Also just thinking of going with the regular Blackberry like a Curve or Tour. Blackberry has a great app store with items such as Pandora and XM/Sirius apps available.
I still don't know if after all that I would want anything other than an iPhone. It's the original and still the best I think. I just wish Steve Jobs would get his head out of his as s and realize AT&T is horrible. If Apple would bring their products to Verizon they would see sales through the roof and people actually being able to use the phone to it's full capabilities. -
It was my (mis?)understanding that the AT&T exclusivity deal with IPhone is coming to an end soon.
As to the apps for the Droid, there are about 10,000 (compared to 100,000 for the IPhone) but the Droid (suppossedly) is more open to programmers to write new apps. So if this is the next biggest phone to compete with the IPhone... -
The exclusivity deal is up in June. But, AT&T uses GSM technology while Verizon uses EV-DO, CDMA technology which is why the iphone is not able to connect to Verizons network. There has been rumors that Apple has it's suppliers in China making a CDMA version iphone. Also, Verizon is in the process of rolling out it's 4G network (LTE, or Long Term Evolution) and should be online by the end of 2010. This will allow for interoperability with most other carriers, and allow for any unlocked LTE phone to be used on any company's network. I think this is wireless companies answer to governments concerns in the last few years about the exclusivity agreements carriers make with manufacturers.
So, all signs point to the iphone becoming universally available. It's just going to take time.
Oh yeah, the droid will catch up with the number of apps. Apple just had a huge head start of course. Plus, a lot of the app makers are tied to Apple in exclusivity agreements too. (ie. app only available for iphone) -
So my asking for a "micro-computer" that also makes phone calls is asking too much of the Droid?

I would love to have an iphone but I am not willing to pay AT&T's over inflated prices for service. -
There is a Droid forum. Maybe more than one. I was able to get some of my questions answered.
As for the number of apps. I thought it was a lot more than just 10,000. Keep in mind its just came out here in the US and new apps are being turned out every day.
For browsing and navigation, checking email and weather etc it does pretty good. This is my first smart phone so I have no other experience to compare to.
For me its not going to work. I have to be able to DL and fill out property condition inspection forms for vacant houses. The level of detail and info required is too high for this small screen. Also some programs don't work on any thing except windblows exploder.
Thankfully Verizon has the 30 day trial period so that I can take this phone back without paying for it. I'm going to get one of their netbooks.
As for battery life. DL the "advanced task killer" app. Its free. After using your phone use this app to zap shut all other running apps. Your phone isn't constantly updating your email and all the other apps. Just running your phone and instant messaging just like other phones. This makes the battery life last much longer. What really drains it is using the apps, playing games and browsing the net. -
What are you wanting to do specifically? -
truckerdave1970 Thanks this.
