Ok here's the setup 2020 peterbilt 579, stryker 497hpc, 2 hustlers antenna. The guy cut the trucks pre wired power connector for cb and solder it straight to the strykers power cable (power not direct to the batteries) and then he cut the existing single coax for dual antennas and made a Y split coax instead. Everything's working fine until i noticed that my omnitracs ELD started doing diagnostics and malfunctioning and ended up losing gps connection. I ended up going to Omnitracs service shop and we figured that the cb radio was causing this issue. Whenever we turn on the radio the omnitracs eld loses gps signal and when its off the eld starts working fine. Anybody else having this problem? Or what could it be? TIA to all the cb pros here!

Please give details for these questions.

First who is 'guy'? Guy Richie? I wouldn't trust Richie at all, his radio work sucks.

Second why did 'guy' cut the prewired power connector and solder it to the radio's power cable?

Third did 'guy' make a phased coax harness or just hacked the system up by using the same exact original coax?

Fourth and most important, have you had this radio messed with - aka peak and tune?

The guy is the tech at the cb shop. He cut the pre existing connector because he couldnt get the wire into the connectors, he said its easier to splice it and solder it it directly. On the coax cable he just cut the existing coax that has 2 copper wires in it and split it and made 2 separate coax and he got a Y split coax cable that goes into the cb and it connects the coax the he separated. thats probably what a phased coax harness means. He didn't used the same coax he made one. And he didnt peak and tune it. He just showed me the basics on how to operate the knobs and buttons. But i do radio chexks and talks to drivers and it seems clear and working.

The thing that throws up a red flag for me is the power wires. Since a real CB radio puts out 4 watts AM and 12 watts SSB, the trucks power and ground wire are probably only 16 gauge wire. That's why he cut the connector off. But I'm not sure what the manufacturer use. With your 497 Stryker having a peak 90 watt output SSB, you would want at least a 10 gauge wire running to the trucks batteries. If you talk with the power turned down on the radio, it won't be a problem.

I don't understand why these CB shops don't have an antenna analyzer. An external SWR meter is better than nothing, but with an analyzer, the tech could show you all the readings about your antenna system after he's done working on the antennas. That way you would have a happy customer too. It would be interesting to see his work on splicing the coax. Usually splicing into coax causes more problems, although I'm a little confused on that part. Did the truck have dual antennas installed? You mentioned it was a single coax that he spliced into.

OK first I would get the power fixed right, pull it from the battery, as Night said the radio has a lot more power than a regular CB.

Second get the coax fixed, replace all of it, chances are the left one was meant for the cb and the right one was for the am/fm radio, the dealer can tell you what you have in the build sheet.

However to build a proper phased system, you need to have RG-59 coax from the radio to the antenna coax which is rg-58. IF he didn't used the RG-59 coax before the tie, he is a moron and you need to get your money back.

IF he did use it, then you still have to make sure the multiplexer isn't there cure all the leakage, which is part of the problem with the qualcom.

Yes, truck have dual oe antennas with two cables into one coax. And he splice it and made two coax ends that goes into a T split connector to the cb. He made that T split connector aswell.

YEP, he is a moron, get someone who knows what they are doing to put in a proper phase antenna system or better yet just use the left side of the truck for the CB and the other side for the am/fm radio.

Ok, so i went to a different cb shop earlier and got the power supply w/ ground straight to the batteries, he tuned the cb radio and the antennas aswell. Cb works properly and my problem with the omnitracs eld is still there but only when around hills and i guess mountains around Chattanooga. But it's better than it was before. I just turn the radio off whenever i see my eld loses gps signal. Another thing i noticed earlier after direct power installation is that whenever i press to talk my cab led lights would blink in sync with me pressing the talk button. My next option is to change omnitracs into a different eld unit but then i could just turn off the radio whenever it loses gps signal.

The reason you are having issues is because of the interference by the radio with the antenna coax.
